I'm thinking trying to get more into the wildlife side of my photography but sometimes find my lens options limit me at times.

Anybody got any experience of the big Nikon fit lenes. A acquaintance has a Sigma 50-500 says its good just wondered if anyone else had recommendations

Yep...ive used the Sigma 150-500 OS ...
thats the one i would go for as it has image stabilisation

I have the Nikon 70 -300mm and while I love it I dont think it is really powerful enough to be a really diverse wildlife lens. If your serious about wildlife and want to get those killer close ups I'd go with what Hamish has to say.

I saw a guy in a hide once with a huge Canon lens taking pictures of small birds feeding. Even though they weren't far away (maybe 40 -50ft) at 300mm (450mm with crop factor) just was not anywhere enough.

ye its the 300 im using at mo just not a patch on what mate gets

just need figure out if want spent 1200 on a lens and where does it come from lol

Hi Allan

I had the 50-500mm Sigma (about £750 at the time) for my Canon 7D as i wanted a super Telephoto. I really wanted a canon equivalent but the 100-400mm was £1200.00 but that was way to many ££££ for my impulse buy lol

I had a wim to try some wildlife (major fail on my part as i dont have the patience ) photos and thought the the lens would be great for my air shows i like to go and see.

I only had this lens for about 6 months and to be honest i hated it. Was Way to big & heavy and suffered heavily with CA & very soft results.

I eventually traded up to a canon 100-400mm L lens and that is brilliant, so much lighter and far better IQ, No CA & sharp enough for my needs. I wish i would have chosen the canon in the first place and save a few ££££ when i sold the sigma.

The only issue is Darren, there isn't really a Nikon equivelent ...
Well apart from the 80-400 Nikon ...
Nikon UK - NIKKOR Lenses - Auto Focus Lenses - FX Lenses - Zoom Lens - 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF NIKKOR - Digital Cameras, D-SLR, COOLPIX, NIKKOR Lenses
But... It's a little sluggish on the AF ... Not a bad lens I don't think, although my experience of it is a little limited ... I couldnt get on with it my self! Found the 70-200 + TC more responsive on the AF!

... I think the 150-500 sigma is supposed to be better than the 50-500 sigma(????)
It's not a small lens mind as you say!
