Testing your patience?

Sorry, chaps and chapesses, but I do fear I am testing your patience. I've hit a brick wall trying to import photos from my X100 to my iMac. Maybe I'm doing something stupid...

I've attached the lead I've always used to connect to a computer with this camera - USB. On my PC the photos just start downloading automatically. On the iMac, nothing happens. I looked in Finder - but the camera does not register at all. I opened Elements and tried to import the photos, but can't see that option. I've switched the camera on and off and on again, even using different ports. The camera lights up each time, saying 'USB' and seems happy, but the Mac says nothing. Ive restarted the iMac, same problem. The lead seems to be working, as does the camera.

What am I missing?

I suspect it is a formatting issue but normally it's PC that can't recognise Mac formatted devices. Do you have a spare card? See if the Mac recognises the camera with that in if not try re formatting the card and see if that changes anything.

I imagine when you plug it in the 'drive' appears on your desktop as a drive... or it should. As Pete said I don't import photos like that, I use aperture and when I plug my camera in they are imported into a project folder within aperture

Not sure if Mountain Lion is the same as Snow Leopard, but check the Finder Preferences. I have the following ticked:

Do you have the latest camera firmware installed? May be worth checking into that but using a card reader may be the way to go on this. You can buy them from about £3.50 to £50 on Amazon. If you have USB3 on your Mac it may be worth investing in a USB3 card reader.

Well, I had everything checked like Pete has, but no joy. So, I tried a card reader, and Hey Presto. It worked. Don't know why that should be. I was beginning to think it had something to do with the Intego Virus Barrier 6 I installed yesterday or the day before. But it shouldn't be that.

Oh well, using a card reader is no problem at all. Ah, the joys of a new computer!

I reverted to the old PC laptop, and the cable worked perfectly. I copied the files to my external hard drive, which my iMac does recognise. Anyway, I'm good to go. Just need to use the card reader.

THANKS, EVERYONE!!!!

Make sure to eject the card on the Mac before physically removing it Rob - use the eject ICON or drag the card to teh bottom right of the main desktop, where an eject ICON will pop up.

Cheers, Chris. I used the eject icon in Finder. Just edited a few shots, and am off to upload them to Flickr. One or two might find their way to this Forum...don't hold your breath!

Fingers crossed! :D

OK, I'm happy using RAW now, and have images saved as tiffs. Now, how do I turn them into jpegs for upload to Flickr and here? When I do Save As, jpeg does not appear as an option...

Rob - if your iMac is a new one there should be an SD card reader slot on the right hand side underneath the DVD drive slot!

If JPG isn't an option you're probably working with 16 Bit TIFFs. JPG is an 8-Bit format. Convert to 8 Bit TIFF (Image > Mode > 8bits/channel) then you can save as JPG.

If you are trying to save tiffs as jpegs in a photo editing program most likely it won't work because you have to convert the tiffs to 8bit from 16bit first, also you have to flatten the image layers if any.

If you have Lightroom in the library tab there is a Flikr button. The procedure to give LR permission to sign into LR is quite easy to follow. After that you just drag your images to the photostream button in LR and then click publish. Ctr clicking on photostream button gives you a few options like Open in Flikr which will take you via your web browser to Flikr.

There is some good info on how to do this but I cant remember if it is in the Adobe help site or elsewhere on the web. A quick Google search should reveal it however.

Convert to 8-bit - that's the info I needed! Many thanks to both of you :)

And, yes, Dave, there is a card reader slot! Never noticed that before...

If using the SD slot don't locate it by feel as you may accidentally slide it into the DVD slot which would make it very tricky to retrieve! Allegedly :p
