The Colonies

These houses are called the Colonies, aside the Water Of Leith, Edinburgh. I was excited when I got the prints from Boots, as I thought I had two great pictures. But I was saddened when I saw the scans, as they seem over-sharp, too detailed, chaotic, as they do in the first here. The second is not so bad.. The prints are better.

The first is indeed a wee bit chaotic but it gives the sense of the viewpoint of a kid climbing the trees, as you undoubtedly were.

The second I think is a good fotie, with a calm riot of branches pleasantly framing the water and the houses.

I'd stay firmly on the ground if I were you, Rob. I agree that the first is too chaotic and the scans do seem a bit over-sharpened and high in contrast - maybe some negative clarity would help. I like the second though.

"Negative clarity" - a known technical term, or an Askewism? Sounds like something we could ascribe to information given out by the Trump administration.

In Lightroom, instead of move the slider to the right to increase clarity, more it to the left.

The first is a bit chaotic, but it works for me; the longer I look, the more different things I see. The second, softer one has a fine vintage feel to it.
