I was hoping for a printer that took your image file and produced a 'polaroid' print - something with a rechargeable battery that you could put in your pocket and print to via wifi or bluetooth.

A bit of a mystery to me too. I guess the camera-phone is a bit like the old SX-70 type of camera in some ways. That was marketed at some point as a fun way to share. This is a way of making a 'quick' print from them with a distinctive look (and they do make the film after all!). At least 2700 people thought it a good idea!
