The Rules of Photography

Aside from the 'conversation' towards the end, I thought this was an interesting essay.

Rules of The Game

And it got me thinking that it would be interesting to work out a way of taking some images at 'random' to remove the 'choice' that the photographer contributes to the purpose - imagine standing on street corner, determined by sticking a pin in a map while blindfolded, and then spinning a bottle to 'choose' the direction and then using one of those pop-up frog type toys to select when to shoot (on automatic). An interesting idea but then I thought, "Hang on, this is a bit like so much art, where the idea becomes the main factor rather than the resulting image". So, while tempted to 'give it a go' I think I will resist and keep my image making, at least for the most part, a deliberate process.

I like the "deliberate process" part Pete. At the same time, I like what Kertesz said: "Have confidence in the inventions and transformations of chance." And I think photography is often best when the two concepts go hand-in-hand.
