This year's amaryllis

Usually, we end up with brilliant red blooms. This year they're slightly more interesting.

What accounts for the change?

I believe that amaryllis bulbs are like tulip bulbs and that they are grown and sorted by color. So when you buy an amaryllis, you pre-select the color you want. I don't think it's a random thing.

I'm speaking to the change in color from red to striped in the same plant(s).

Not sure what you mean. The blooms on this bulb are striped. Other flowers have multi-colored petals. You'd need to ask a botanist why. I'm just a retired old guy with a lot of cameras and spare time.
