Generations of Wigan folk have rubbed the shoe of Sir Francis Sharp Powell in Mesnes Park for good luck. Just why his right boot is considered so lucky has long been forgotten but it’s been so well rubbed over the years it's needed repairing several times as people have worn holes in it!
