I have a Nikon AF 50mm 1.8 which is the very similar (almost identical) earlier version. It is in very good condition but does a part of the filter thread missing but you can still screw in filters with no problem. The focusing is a little jerky manually but fine on auto focus. I am fairly certain that this has the same performance as the D model, a bit soft wide open but very sharp once you stop down to 2.8.

I don't use it much anymore, especially as I have a 50mm 1.4 now.

"d" is for "distance"
D lenses are able to relay distance information back to the camera to aid with TTL flash metering
many pre "d" lenses are basically the same as d lenses in terms of optical configuration and quality... They just don't have the tech to give the camera info for the flash metering
