After I posted I realised that the photo just didn't have "it". It had no gesture, which is probably the most important ingredient for this type of photo and the lighting wasn't great (or it didn't match what I wanted).
OK then, this was the photo:

Applied push process shaped D-curve using curves, then cropped and added 5px border.
