X100S JPEG

I'm trying figure out the differences between the various JPEG settings. The Velvia one is easy but I'm not sure I understand the difference visually between the Astia and the two High Pro Negatives. It would be easier for me to use these because I'm not very good with the Adobe stuff and I spend too much time in front of the computer anyway. So it would solve a multitude of sins. :)

So far I am beyond happy with this camera. I'm fighting the urge to accessorize.... I keep thinking I need one of those little soft release buttons, a thumb grip, a pimped out zirconium encrusted red leatherette case...........sigh.....

Resist the urge! Mind, zirconium encrusted you say? Oh go on then, go for it! ;).

Decisions, decisions. Do I go withe zirconium Peace sign or the Iron Cross? Of course I think on the Iron Cross I would need black leatherette. :)

Thanks for the heads up on the soft release. You are the second person who has told me they are a good investment. Now do I get the little bug or the sophisticated red or black?

I was boring and went for black although the last ones I bought had the Match Technical logo on - Beep - Boop - Bip - Bug. I love the Thumbs-up too but, having never handled the X 100 I don't know how much it would add. On the digital Ms it makes a huge difference.

When you say huge difference you are talking about the thumb thingy right?

Don't be so hard on yourself, Pete; you're not boring all the time. (At least I don't think so.) :p

Pete is sophisticated not boring. It's sort like the difference between Bryan Ferry and Michael Bolton. :D

Don't tempt me Brian you know I live in Texas the epitome of good taste and refinement........

Yes, the thumb thingy. On the M8/M9/Monochrom they add back the stability that used to come from bracing your thumb against the wind-on lever. It makes the grip on the camera much more sure. The Match Technical ones are quite pricey but,as with most things, you get what you pay for and they are beautifully designed and very well made. Having said that, I have never tried to compare them with the cheaper copies but, he came up with the idea, found a small machine shop (in China as he couldn't find one in the US that could make them to the quality and consistency he wanted - or more likely that wanted to get involved in such a small project) to produce them.

The manual has a rough guide to the film types. I generally use Astia. Although it has the least saturation, it has good dynamic range and stands up to some good tweaking.

As you o ow, I like the soft release, though it took a while to get used to it, and therefore use it properly.

I go away for a weekend and you buy a new camera! :D

Lovely shot - the in camera JPEGs look lovely

I agree on the soft release - makes for smoother shutter actuation

I also love my thumb grips - I have a Lensmate one for my X100, which helps with holding/bracing the camera in the hand

Chris if they improve the AF in the X Pro series like on X100S Fuji is going to have a hard time keeping up with the demand. It's a dramatic improvement. I'm happy with my X Pro now but this is faster than 18 or 14. Contrary to what I've read on a couple of reviews, I've had no issues in lower light levels. In fact I haven't really noticed a difference and that's with one bulb on. Maybe I'm wrong but that's why I take most reviews with a large grain of salt. It may just be what I am trying to focus on. In this case a kitten. :D

I broke down and ordered the soft release and the thumb grip. I have the regular grip for the X Pro which I really like. I'm going to wait and see how much I like the one on the X100S.

I have already boxed up the Nikon gear in anticipation of an X Pro upgrade early next year. :D
