go to a store and pick them both up. play around with the buttons and see which one feels better in your hands.

I let you through the registration as I hadnt heard it but looked like it might be a name.
Anyway, Id buy the nikon ... but im a nikon person...
There is probably little in it in terms of picture quality

It is Aje. I live in South Wales.
Reason i ask is that i am thinking of selling my 50D and buying a Nikon D90 as my family use Nikons and my mates!! I just dont use it but i would use a Nikon as i would be able to borrow lenses etc.

That is as good a reason as any for choosing one brand over the other. Technically they are not too different, better access to information/experiences and lenses are more important IMO.

I am welsh, not asian of any sort as that is what people think when i tell them my name! Not sure why it was chosen for me!! Mum and dad are no longer with us (Passed away several years ago now).

There is an Indian name 'Himesh' and Gill is a popular surname in India (so I'm told) ...
I met a Sikh man the other day, he came to buy some desks off me ... He said just as he was leaving "you know, I was convinced you would be Indian"
im not scotish either ... ...
Funnily enough, or perhaps not so funny, my parents are also long passed ...
Anyway, enough of this odd comon ground, sorry again I had to ask about your name ...

The 40D. Can be had for a good price. Seen one with low actuations for around £280 body only. Worth it or pass and get the D90 or 50D?

I would buy the D90, it has some advantages, but I am a Nikon guy so I might be a bit biased.

Did you mean Nikon d40 not canon 40d?
£280 for a nikon d40 is very expensive!
You could buy 2 of them for that at usual used prices!

The 40d is the previous model to the 50d ... If you have a 50d a 40d would be a downgrade
Compared to the Nikon, the d90 would almost certainly be better than the 40d ...
But by what and how, no idea... You would have to make some specific side by side tests in certain areas!
At the end of te day, these are all pretty decent cameras!

40D is supposed to be good anyway. Apparently some say better than the 50D regarding noise / low light etc.
Made a boob on previous posts as i dont have a 50D!! Was looking at either a 40D or a D90 to buy. See, all my researching has muddled my tiny brain.
Anyway, today i was going to buy a 40D with low actuations and a 50mm 1.8 lens, 2nd hand with 6 months warranty. Not sure if it was right so holding off til tomorrow. Might go for a D90 with a 50mm
