A quick rough and ready tilt shift experiment with Canon 90mm TS-E

Mark Grant

Canon user
Today I noticed my collection of compact cameras lined up on top of a filing cabinet after recent card emptying and battery charging and as I had my canon 90mm TSE on my Canon 60D I though why not experiment for a minute or two in between answering emails and the phone...

Both photos are with the lens wide open at f2.8.

The first photo is with the lens in normal mode so depth of field as normal as with any lens:

The second photo has the lens rotated and tilted so the plane of focus was almost diagonal in a quick attempt to get the ends of all the cameras in focus.

Notice the orange box at the left hand of the photo in the background, it's in focus as well as the end of the camera at the front.:)

The lens was wide open at f2.8 hence not much depth and not enough light to stop down and its only a quick test.:)

You can see the creative possibilities with this for product photography which is something I am interested in.

The Canon 90mm TS-E is fairly expensive, I bought it years ago when they did not cost as much.

some current prices in England:
Canon TSE9028 90mm f/2.8 Tilt & Shift Lens - Filter: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Canon EF 90mm f2.8 TS-E Lens - 2544A016AA - Jessops - Lenses

Canon TS-E 90mm f2.8 Lens (2544A016AA) - wex photographic

Jacobs Digital | Canon TS-E 90mm f2.8

It's my favourite lens at the moment.

Yes, especially for one of them CV lenses!
M43 camera bodies can be had for close to £100 now though! Adapter £50... I've got a bunch of Nikon lenses somewhere ...

Does it show that I'm desperate to give one a go ;)
I'm guessing 45mm will give me the best idea for what I'm doing and how to do it?
Do you think??

Pete, your a legend! Thank you!
I suppose on a crop sensor this would be best part of 70mm odd ....
Maybe the 45 is the perfect solution for me wanting a tilt shift lens for work (products etc) but also to play with ...
I'm just intrigued by the level of rotate nikons have and how that might or might not effect me ...

yes d3, but i can switch it to crop or stick it on the d50 (similar res)
Or borrow toms d7000....
that sort of res would be ok for web images
