Bad day in Beantown

Canon 28-70mm 1:2.8 L is my favorite...oldest...most costly walk around but it couldn't withstand the final fall to the tile floor. I don't baby my lenses so this one has been through a lot. It's been one tough lense. A testiment to it's design...the glass is fine because it failed at it's designed weak spots. Off to Canon to see what the damage will cost.

If I were you I think I'd be crying into a bottle of Single Malt...

omfg that looks terrible totally gutted for ya..................!!!

I dropped my 70-200mm F2.8 L mk2 lens, it didnt literally drop apart but zoom became very stiff and lens edge was all bashed, optics were fine but it cost me £800 repair.............gulp

Glen...It's bad..did think of throwing myself on the floor screaming...but I would never let anything touch a Single Malt but a glass and my lips. ;)

That's a lovely lens Glenn - worth repairing if the price is palatable, or replacing if not.

I have the same vintage model, before they went 24-70, and it's just superb.

Given the level of damage, I'm thinking repair might cost the same/more than a used whole one.

EBAY used range from $800-$1000 for EX condition units

Where did you send for repair estimate?

I don't think Canon (CPS) repair this model any more as it's no longer current - but third-party companies will

I use H and K Camera Service H and K Camera Service as they are staffed by Canon trained techs.

They did a superb repair on my 17-35 L lens - like new now after a drop.

Thanks for the advice Chris.
I just called Canon...they said send it and they will reply with an estimate. As I'm now retired...and on a fixed income:)...I need to do some checking around before I take it on. I was going to first try the local camera shop for advice...but you have given me some more food for thought.

A list of 'supported' lenses for repair by Canon Professional Services is available here: Canon Professional Services - Repairs

Just select the PRODUCTS ELIGIBLE FOR REPAIR link for the pop up list

The 28-70 L is not included - so I don't think Canon will touch it :(

Third party cover is however just as good - and usually more cost effective

My 17-35 L repair cost me $250 for a replacement zoom barrel - and the lens came back cleaned and like new

Thanks again Chris...You saved me some time and shipping cost. I'm a little upset that the guy told me to send it in thoigh.

Well - I guess it's worth a follow up call to your Canon contact to ask - given that CPS says it's not on the covered list

Maybe your man knows another route outside of CPS?
