Thanks for looking!

So do you take your hands off the controls to take the shots?

Always loved cloud shots - and I like the idea here that you're between layers of atmosphere, rather than being just below or above it.

That V shaped ga in the cloud showing the ground in #1 is fabulous - makes for a great comp.

How do you go about exposure when shooting bright cloud scenes?

Yes, I do! Unless it is really turbulent you don't need your hands on the controls the whole time.....

Thanks!

I normally just spot meter off the brightest bit and the re-compose, a -1/3 stop exposure compensation can also help but since I am a firm believer in "expose to the right" I seldom do that. It also depends on the camera, some tolerate over-exposure, and can be "pulled" more than others.

I like these too ... It always frustrates me in planes that I don't have my camera or the window is tiny or it's dirty or many other things ...
I'd love to have the freedom and time to take shots like this!

Yes, shooting through windows are not fun, I always make sure I clean the windows well before the flight and often end up turning the plane, or banking the wing to use it as a sun-shade to try and eliminate reflections.

On one of my planes you can open the doors in flight if you are not flying above a certain speed, it helps a lot but it gets rather windy and can be intimidating in the beginning

Tried that on a 757 once - aircrew didn't seem to keen!! ;)

Those photos are lovely. It’s the first time I’ve thought about just how far apart the higher and lower clouds actually are; looking up at them gives no idea.

Oh, and I hope you’ll forgive me including the poem. I’m sure that everyone already knows it but I kept thinking of it when I looked at your photos.

High Flight
by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,

I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up, the long, delirious burning blue

I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, nor even eagle flew.

And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space...

...put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Thanks Kate!

No, I don't mind at all, it is a wonderful poem that describes they joys of free flight, when I am up there in wonderland I often realize how privileged I am.........

Sometimes the layers are close and you can hardly squeeze between them, but mostly they are far apart.

Thanks for sharing the poem :D

You're welcome :)

Can't live without poetry and music, must admit. Planes make me cry. It's the unbearable beauty of them. Well, OK, I'm not that fond of passenger jets but Spitfires, Lancaster Bombers, F 16's, B 52's, Vulcans, Harriers etc. in flight have an effect on me I've never been able to fathom, and the closer I can get to them the better. A real feast for all the senses. Looking forward to seeing more of your work (but didn't you mention something about getting much closer to the ground today? ;))

Yes, planes have a similar effect on me! Also have no love for the big ones but spend a lot of time around the smaller ones, building, rebuilding, fixing and fiddling when not flying :)

I agree, without poetry and good music this world would be a lot poorer! I have some good memories of playing/dancing with fluffy clouds in an aerobatic plane to the tune of some good classical music from the iPod :)

Yes, have macro lens mounted on camera body, just waiting for a bit of a storm to clear up outside, we have been having some strange and unseasonable weather lately......
