thanks everyone

That is beautiful!!!!!! What kind of filter is this? I am very interested.
hoya r72. bit expensive for the 77mm version, but you could go smaller with the fuji.
Hoya 77mm RM-72 Infrared Filter B77RM72
it's an infrared filter, so foliage gets bright, sky and water go dark. shooting raw for ir shots is important if you don't set the white balance up. the sooc file was red and yellow, in lightroom i moved white balance as far to the cool side as i could and then desaturated the file instead of hitting the b&w button.

those clouds are astounding, looks like massive surf
felt like it too with the amount of wind that was present. at one point i was holding my camera strap down while the camera was on the tripod to keep it out of the picture.

Great shot Beth...love the feeling. Brings back good memories...
When I lived there...we spent a lot of time out there. I solo backpacked the entire VA Appalachian Trial...a 3 day weekend at a time in the fall/winter in the early 80's. If I remember correctly there is a campground across the street? I seem to remember also waking up to many deer in the meadow. Thanks for the memories with this wonderful shot.
we spend a lot of time there too. at least every other month, but usually more. going back next weekend if i can mange it. renewed my annual pass last weekend, it had been expired since october. but everytime we've been since then it's been unmanned at the gates and/or partially closed, due to weather.
never had any desire to hike the appalachian trail, at least not in one go, but i do enjoy many of the day or half day hikes. there were a ton of deer, esp. after nightfall.
big meadows lodge and campsite is across the street. and so is wayside, the little gas station, gift store, wildlife exhibit and burger joint. last time we were there someone had been injured and they landed a helicopter in big meadows to take them off the mountain.
