Boiler House

I visit this boiler house each time I go to Heligan. Pop my head in over the stable door to see what is what.
Although I've used this scene before I quite like the light given in this room by the small window and cobwebs.
So another from the Boiler house from a few days ago.
Not being able to access the room itself , these are all taken over the bolted stable door which , does limit the angles available to shoot from.

This second image I am not too sure about at all. But some of the qualities are ok maybe.

I know exactly where you were Julian and I couldn't make anything of it at all. I love the warmth of the top image with the dried flowers and the texture of the bricks on the left. I like the bottom one too, but something makes me wonder what it would look like without the bits in the bottom corner. I think it's the pointy shadow that I find distracting. Maybe a square(ish) crop? I really love the dried honesty with something looking quite similar on the other side of the glass :)

I don't know, Lesley, I think I prefer the comp in the second. Those objects and their shadows on the left remind me of some late 19th-century paintings, maybe early 20th-century, where the artist would deliberately have the focal points off to one side or even disappearing over the edge of the canvas. I'm sure Julian could come up with some names.

However, the pp, Julian, is looking like an attempt to imitate a painting instead of being a photograph. I've been guilty of that before, and am questioning it now. What do you think?

I really love the "texture" of the first. It's warm and welcoming.
IMHO would try a square crop on the second...but maybe I have embraced the square to much?

I think the 2nd image is a stoater, Julian. Which is not to suggest at all that the first one isn't very good. But in #2 I like how the frame is split half and half in a sense, with gray brown tones on the oft and greenish bluish (or whatever color that is) on the right. Also, I like the off center focal points as well as the color of the indoor plant being the same as the outdoors. Lovely. What camera? (Never mind,...I went to the Flickr link and I see its the DP3 Merrill.)

Thank you Lesley this is becoming a go to spot in the Gardens as they do change the ornaments from time to time.

Rob I hear and concur, which is why I query it myself. Yet it is just one of those that is processed as per normal. Nothing more than Photoshop no filters or presets or anything. I think it is a digital thing maybe. I get some which can look HDR which are not and it is plainly the fact
of being digital. I took one on my other camera of the exact subject and light which looked equally painterly and did not use.

Beautiful Julian!

I like both images, but the second one works for me personally, adore the painterly effect on it, superb photography. Do you do any processing with this image to make it look the way it does?

Wonderful.

Regards;
Peter

Thanks Peter. No I did not process it this way deliberately. In fact I tried to make it less painterly, but failed dismally . I initially was not going to post it because of that. Normally work flow on this as everything is
Raw-Tiff and then work a bit on colours, levels, gamma, maybe graduate B+W with luminance, resize and that is about it. I do work locally on different parts as long as it does not create banding.

Oh well...that's just the way it is then. It does look beautiful, and I do like the stuff on the left.
Just a guess about the HDR look and this look Rob. I aught to learn more and sometimes feel very inadequate about anything photography when I read some of the discussions
here , especially about film.

These are the objects in the bottom left corner, with the shadows of the feather. Did not like this image to much.

Ooooh... I love this one too!! It has so many textures - the smooth glass, the rough baskets, the spiky flowers and those wonderful silky feathers. Fairly neutral colours with smaller areas of gold and orange. I like the edge of the window too, so I don't always prefer things neat and tidy :)
Thanks Lesley. If you dont mind things, too neat and tidy, sounds like you'd like my home :D
