Just checking your still awake...

This is a detail from the "Exploration" Obelisk in Bristol by Phillpa Threlfall.
This four sided obelisk is surmounted with a steel armillary sphere
made by master blacksmith James Blunt – the whole sculpture standing about 18 feet high.
It was intended to celebrate the mariners who departed from Redcliffe Quay, Bristol
in the 15th and 16th centuries to explore the New World. It was believed at that time
that the Unknown deep was occupied by strange and frightening monsters.
The creatures depicted, often half fish, half beast, were based on those which appear in a
15th/16th Century book found in the Chain Library of Wells cathedral.
