Canon EF-S Compatability?

As Rhona has a couple of Canon EF-S lenses 18-55 and 50mm f/1.8 and she has hinted I might be able to borrow them if I had something to put them on. Struck me that if I ever get into interchangeable lenses, we should be a Canon family. So, what are the possibilities? A Canon body such as the 600D, 60D, or the new M compact? Or are the lenses compatible with something else, maybe an Olympus?

them lens are cheap & cheerful yet do the job. The 50mm is very underrated awesome bit of kit for such cheap price. They will fit any canon Eos camera that is not full frame IE 5D & Variants & 6D & The pro 1 series cameras

So Eos 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D 60D, 7D, 350D, 400D 450D 500D 550D & 600D will all be fine.

as for fitting other makes, well they maydo with an adapter of some sort

Rob I think the EF-S lenses are designed specifically for use on Canon EOS digital crop sensor cameras. Don't know if that includes the 600D (because I'm not familiar with that camera), but it certainly includes the 60D. Don't know if they fit the new M cameras. I'm guessing probably not.

Chris (among other RPFrs I'm sure) could give you definitive information.

they are defo more than ok, what i meant was people slate them for being cheap, but many use them, i used them and have no issues what so ever ;-)

Yes 600d & 60D & all crop sensor canons they will fit

great find, i didnt know about that :-)

They do fit on the new eos m ... All be it with an adapter
i would look else where though... My limited experience of the eos was very negative!

The 50mm is not an ef-s lens though, it's en ef... Therefore will fot on any of the canon range including the full frame 5d et al.

that would also be the lens of the two that I would concider borrowing... Whilst the 18-55 is not a ba lens, it's not worth making decisions around. (IMO)

i owned 6 canon dslrs prior to the x-pro 1 and still own one of them. i had a pretty good experience with them and would recommend them. if i was buying one today and didn't want to spend a lot, i'd get an old 40d or 50d so i could have the aperture thumb wheel on the back. i wasn't fond of changing the aperture in manual mode by pressing the av button and turning the dial that changes the shutter speed.

canon makes things simple in terms of naming.
their crop sensor cameras are the xxxxd series (like the 1000d) and are the bottom of the line, followed by the xxxd (600d, etc) series, the xxd (60d) series and the 7d.
the full frame cameras are the 6d, the 5d series and the 1d series.
the higher the number in the series, the newer the camera. ie, the 10d was first, followed by the 20d, 30d, 40d, 50d and now the 60d.

... I should just add, it would still make sense for you to buy a canon I you were to buy an slr ...
I just meant I wouldn't necessarily buy a an apsc camera so you can use the 18-55 efs lens.
Ie you can buy any canon and the better of the lenses (the 50) will work just fine.

I'm in the same boat as Hamish here, I've got the 600d which came with the 18-55 , and if truth be told, i used it for maybe 1 week maximum , I didn't like it and so bought a different lens.
The one and only thing I'd ever use the 18-55 for is if I need to use it at 18, because that's currently my widest bit.
But saying that I never use wide stuff. Ill probably flog it .

The build quality on the EF-s 18-55mm isn't that great, the warm weather killed mine travelling in Malaysia. The 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens. You can buy a 2nd hand 20D for under a £100 these days, 30D and 40D are also much cheaper :)

An easy way to tell what fits what is the EFS lenses have a WHITE lens mount guide & EF lenses have a RED mount guide. On the body there is a corrosponding mark, the bodies which take EFS & EF have both markings on them the ones that take only EF lenses have only RED.This cuts out any confussion as to what will go on, as the early D30 & D60 bodies which were smaller sensors WILL NOT TAKE EFS mount lenses.
Hope this helps.

I got the 18-55 as the kit lens with my 550D and never had any problems with it, nor did anyone on here mention the lens when commenting on my photos ..... I can only believe that it's ok then :D

There are absolutely no doubts that it is ok ... My point is that it's not worth making decisions around.
the main point of that being that as the only lens that was making decisions around was the 50mm ... Not an efs lens ... Ie. there was no need to worry about efs lens compatabilty based on the lenses in question!

I'm not recommending the EF-S 18-55mm but here are two photos I took with it:
