Changing lens question

A real beginner's question...

A student of mine gave me a free Pentax zoom lens for my Pentax K1000. I'm not sure if it will fit, so would like to try it out. However, I'm half way through a film - will I loose shots, or even the whole film, if I take off the lens on the camera and replace it with the new one?

My hunch is that I might lose one or two shots, but it should be OK, is that right?

You'll be fine Rob - the camera shutter will stay closed and keep the film light-tight, so you can change lenses without exposing the film.
