Crag Attack North Wales

Our annual mountain day out, saw us attempting to climb a route called Kirkus Direct HVS4c an 80 metre 4 pitch route on some fine welsh rock, Craig yr Ogof or Cwm Silyn which forms part of the Nantlle Ridge.

The weather gods were not with us, the route we wanted to do was quite wet. So we opted for the Ordinary route fine diff climb of nearly 400 feet. Although quite an easy climb the exposure was massive with a least 2 pitches of having nothing but a sheer drop of 300 under you.

The views were simply staggering, the far tip of Anglesey as well as the coast of Ireland were to be seen, the route was long and took us close to four hours to complete. The walk off down a steep stone shoot in the setting sun was sublime. Finally got back to the car at 10.30pm, and enjoyed a rather welcome Maccy D's in Caernarfon, before the long plod home.

Lovely record of the trek Nick but also seriously good landscape photography thrown in. The first and fourth images are standouts from a great set. All this must be good for the soul; wish I could have been there.

It's nice combining the two Tom, just a little bit wary of climbing with the X pro 1 as I'm terribly crack handed. We generally all share a climbing sack for essentials and emergency stuff, fortunately I have avoided sack hauling duty.

Julian you can never do it enough justice though, best mountain day I've done in ages, though the body was certainly a bit reluctant to move yesterday.

Yes the photograph is actually a visual fantasy of the place or thing and can never convey all the other emotions that such scenery and the elements provoke. Yet you do show what glimmer of that reality a photograph can achieve very well indeed Nick. I enjoyed the view from the top whilst sitting in my armchair and can do without those extra aches and pains, although it is often a small sacrifice to be made and well worth while, that I am sure

Super set Nick and, as said, some fine landscapes too. Good record of the challenge, mind, I've always been of the opinion that mountains look far more impressive from the bottom!
Yes Pete you make a valid point, and one I ask myself quite a bit, when dangling on the end of a rope with only bits of wire threaded into cracks. Sometimes however when your sat high up in an eyrie looking down at the miniature landscape below, that you have sweated and toiled over the ascent, there can be no finer achievement. Although the over the next few days, you realise that your mind is writing cheques, that the body finds harder to cash.

A beautiful set Nick which brings back so many memories of trying to park in Rhyd-Ddu!

Magical place which you have captured so well.

I bet the cheques bounced!

Now I see what you've been up to lately and since then not a hand has been able to hold a camera again I gather. Wonderful story in images and they all above have said it so elegantly. I must admire the stamina, the stubborness of an old man doing this and I can see him staggering down on wobbly feet from the mountains, loving his car ever so much at the sight of it. Well done mate, indeed!

~Cheeky bugger :) actually Im quite for for my age, but do agree that the walk back is often the most difficult at the end of a long day. But i was in good company and the banter between us very humerous, helps pass the time. Wish I could take more pictures but the thought of trashing my camera weighs heavy on my mind. I will respond to the pm by the way, super busy at the moment, Gallery sales have been really good over the last few months. So if I'm not shooting I'm printing.
