Edinburgh View

Well, most of my shots are a view of Edinburgh, but here's a VIEW! Mamiya C330S (which I wish I still had), some film or other. Negative scanned today.

That's very pretty.

Not wishing to put a downer on it but I think I detect some vertical banding in the sky near the center. (I think I saw some in the two columns pictures before, too. I wonder if its in the negs? Wait,...the scan of the columns with the blown highlights was a scan by the "pros" so I'm guessing the banding is in the negs--therefore a processing issue.)

Hill and Adamson's studio. Amazing. I'm glad you pointed that out. Many years ago in the Redondo Beach library--I guess I'd have been about 15 at the time--my eye fell upon a book called "Sun Pictures." It was a book of the images of Hill and Adamson showing life in Edinburgh and in Leith. Some of the images were so compelling that I was able to visualize them with no small degree of accuracy many many years later, a fact confirmed when I happened upon the book again fairly recently.

Fine image Rob! (Sorry about the banding comment.)

Glad you mentioned the banding, Brian, as I see it too. I was wondering what caused it - camera, development, scanning. So, you think it could be the processing? I can't remember who did it. I'll keep an eye out for further examples. If it appears in future shots, can I complain to the developer?

Here's another POV:

"Sun Pictures" is indeed a fine book. I've seen an exhibition of many pieces from their work - wonderful to see the originals up close.

I see it in this one, too. Rob if the banding is in the original scans from the processing company and if it's in the scans you made, that tells me the banding is in the negative. Processing isn't cheap. If the banding is a result of the processing I think you have every right to complain. They can't re-process your roll but they may review their processing process. Maybe they'll give you a freebie. Or maybe you should move along to another processor.

I heard that, and that's why I haven't been around for a while - I mean, if I wanted to be blamed for stuff I could stay at home!

Anyway, putting aside such totally unfounded and unjustified attributions, I too can see the banding! :p But, it doesn't detract from the fine images and especially the superb composition in the first one - see how easily I rose above it all! ;) Mind, there is something truly special about the mid ground in the second image. Lovely stuff.
