Figure Studies of Figure Studies

I thought it might be interesting to photograph some figurative statues and took myself to Ickworth house last Saturday only to discover that they only had the one statue that was something like what I was after. Never mine, I did have to burn out the background quite a bit on these as it was quite distracting. Hopefully I can find some more somewhere that are in front of a plain wall.

The background of this one wasn't too bad except for a corner of a wall that coincided with the eye of the statue.

This is a version with muted colours from another angle that like all the other angles had a distracting background.

Interesting Paul. My own preference goes toward the colour or lack of in the second image. many indoor carvings are made from the most gorgeous materials which have aged and marked over time to be great subjects. I like your style and it seems to me you have a style of photography that is recognizable as your own.

Julian's right, you most certainly do. And the second works better for me with the more subtle tones - somehow it seems softer. And the composition has a more languorous feel to it; sensual almost. A superb shot and a fabulous idea. Do you intend to feed this back into your other figure studies?

I think they are both wonderful, but I prefer the second - partly for the more muted tones and also for the inclusion of more recognisable features. Not so much that the first is confusing... rather that the face in the second is so delicate and placed so well on the edge of the shadow. Really beautiful :)

Thanks for the responses everybody.

These are a slight diversion from the photo's of Kerri. I thought it would be interesting to photograph some classical statues in a similar way. This is not the cherub from Dr Who thankfully. I am sure of that as when I took my eyes off them and then looked back it was still there. I think this is Cherub Andy from Little Britain. When I wasn't looking he run off played a game of football, dive from a high board into the pool and layed back on the fish before my eyes turned back.
