First Day With Fuji X-S1

Compared to the X100, it is quite a handful. I've never had a zoom before, well, not of this strength and quality. I'm really impressed with it. All the reviews say it is an excellent zoom/macro camera, but a bit pricey at nearly £700, but I managed to get this refurbished one plus discount for £404, so to me it is a bargain. I got it for the extremes that the X100 can't reach, and it seems to fulfill that role admirably.

These images are as straight out of the camera, maybe with a border added - unless otherwise stated...

Nothing done to this other than a border:

This one darkened slightly in Levels:

So, what to you think of it? I should add that all settings were EXR Auto...

Yes, the tilt is there. I could have corrected that, of course, but wanted to show it unedited. For a hand-held shot, it looks fairly stable to me.

Well that macro shot is a very nice image in its own right Rob. And the telephoto end of the zoom looks pretty good to me. Geometry seems good base on the railings too.

So the slight angle on the long shots was from the camera not due to it being off-axis. Interesting. I wonder why?

Quality seems pretty dam "Fuji" good here Rob, that zoom is incredible...........lol

What is the the focal range of the lens Rob

Seems like a good buy, does it shoot RAW?

i bet your pretty chuffed with your new toy

That is weird isn't it? Rob, how about creating a crop from the wide-angle shot of the tower so it is the same size as the telephoto shot and seeing if there is other distortion present other than the tilt - it looks like it is vertical in the WA shot.

Looking sharp Rob - literally! ;)

The tilt thing - I was hand-holding it, so to be fair to Fuji it needs to be done again with a tripod. I bought a tripod for £20 second hand on Saturday, so I'll give it a try.

I'm impressed with the shot quality for the price. As I said, I only used in in auto mode, so I have a lot of exploring to do to get the best out of it. Looking forward to that.

A friend who dearly loved his old Coolpix8800—one of the first super-zooms—bought one. I have not seen a D300 shot from him since. Loves it—calls it his 9900. His daughter just finished grad school and returned. She was all over it. I suggested that one would make a lovely graduation present, and it was done. Two happy people!

Went back to the school, Fettes College, to try the zoom with a tripod this time. Same position for each photo. Looks pretty good to me.

Looks great, Not sure that a tripod in what looks like the middle of the road is a good idea for safety :D

My wife keeps asking for an easy to use camera with a long lens so I think this could be the one.
It would make a good birthday present as Tracey's birthday is not far off and I would also get to use it ;)

So do I !!

Ha. I was on an island.

It would make an amazing birthday present! My birthday is in July....

Wifes Birthday is also in July :)

The XS1 is compatible with Eye-Fi memory cards which is important as I cant do with faffing with leads and wires with cameras any more..
Eye-Fi Support

I did once buy Tracey some Canon 15x50 IS binoculars for Christmas:D So a camera will be a normal present.

Look at the price, they where £559.00 when I bought them from 7 days shop many years ago..:)

If I sell a canon lens that I dont use any more the XS-1 will be in effect free :)

A lens like this could be fun on a busy beach in spain or somewhere ;)
