Hello from beautiful North Wales

Joan West

Trade Member: Photo Imaging North Wales
Started my interest in photography many moons ago, as a child I used to sit in a blacked out kitchen with my Father using a Gnome enlarger and watching pictures magically appear in chemically trays, I did a graphic design and photography course at Medway college of Art in the sixties, went on to work in Cadbury's design studio, from there I had two years at a silk screen printers in Rhyl then ran an advertising studio in a large motor sales company, I went freelance in 1984 and then in 1994, with a business partner, opened Photo Imaging North Wales in Bangor, Gwynedd.

Our initial processing equipment was a Fuji compact mini lab, over the intervening years we have seen the release of APS film which was heralded as the future of film (yeah right) then the onset of the digital revolution which, of course, required us to make a humungus capital investment on a digital mini lab, kiosks etc, we kept our film processor and maintained a reasonable intake of films however this dropped considerably over the following few years, but we are fortunate in that we still have a number of pro and amateur film users plus I have an Xpan and a Pentax 645 which come out every so often when the mood takes me. My main camera is a Nikon D300

Interest in film does seem to be creeping up again and we have picked up a few Holga users of late so let's hope that this trend increases.
We process 35mm and medium format colour and black and white neg film.

By the way my LRPS and ARPS distinctions were on film!

Hurray another film user!! Welcome to the forum Joan. I' certain you'll enjoy this place. I seem to be mostly shooting digitally at the moment but I do have 2 darkrooms and am determined to pick up some film-based projects I started a couple of years ago. Looking forward to seeing you work and discussing photography with you.

Hi Joan - and welcome! :)

I remember APS arriving, and later figured that it was a cunning move by the camera companies to get people used to the lower quality of the first digital snappy cams!!

Can only imagine what an upheaval the change to digital brought - I remember sitting in the press room at Silverstone race circuit shortly after Canon released the D30 camera, listening to two of the more senior (old) photographers talking. One was complaining to the other that he had developed his shots from the previous weekend's racing as normal, and taken them to the editor on Monday for review. He was totally amazed to be told that they already had all of the shots they needed, as someone else had uploaded their digital images on Sunday from the track...

Just as a point of interest here are the costs that we had to lay out to process APS film, APS automatic carrier £5000, Attacher/Detacher £1000, Manual mask £250, Leader cards & interim cassettes £150.....total £6400!
£6400 for something that lasted not much longer than 18 months before the onset of digital which also brought another big spend out.

Joan

sounds it ... how often do you get to use it ... last time i deved a aps at the shop before we packed it in it cost about £12 or something outrageous

Funnily enough we have a few people who love their APS cameras (not enough to warrant the cost!) and still buy APS films from us as they don't have the interest in digital and we have just found out that our supplier has stopped producing APS films, yet another stab in the back for the small business.....don't get me started......

Joan after an interesting dialog locally here in the US with my local printer, around printing digital images and colour spaces etc - any chance you could do a little piece for folks on here on the best way to prep images for printing?

Getting from the digital world into print, and getting results that match expectations, that sort of thing.

Would be well received I think.

indeed! ...

and if you do feel the need for a self indulgent rant ... we were just discussing the merits of such things here in the office ;)
