Hollow Road

Autumn at the 'Holle Weg'- Hollow Road - in Wageningen.

This path comes down rather steep from the ice-pushed ridge and falls into the Rhine Valley. It is told that the druid (mostly a woman) of the pre-Christian people living here before and during Roman times rolled a burning wheel from above every time the tribe went to war. If the burning wheel reached the valley, they would win the war, if it fell down, they would lose. Probably it's a legend with only limited truth, but the road is old, very old, and eroded into the hill during ages of use....

A very nice shot Rense and a great story to go with it. And especially interesting for me, as in the village I was bought up in and in others nearby, on the edges of Ashdown forest in Sussex in southern England, there are a few 'streets' like this one and they were always referred to as 'The Old Hollow'. I guess the name shares the same Saxon root.

When i was little (living in a south east asian country) i remember seeing photos as these and being transported into another world like a dream.

I love the old religion aspect & respecting nature.

Thank you Pete! Yes, hollow and hol (and holle as adjective) surely have the same root. So, most probably it's Saxon....
