Some of you might have noticed that I, once again, queued for a phone this morning ...
Seriously, I don't know what is wrong with me ...
I can say however, in my defense, that I was thinking of you lot as i knew (i hope) at least a few of you would be interested!
I have spent a little time this afternoon taking some comparative shots, between my old iPhone4 and the new (white, 64gb ) iPhone4s in a bid to give you all an idea of what, if any, improvements you could expect should you choose to upgrade!
First, one of my biggest issues with the iphone 4 ...
Lens Flare
As can be seen in this next shot, the iphone4 suffered with terrible lens flare when shooting into the sunshine.
shots often suffered with this flare that can only really described as looking like a giant flower
iso80 f2.8 1/6000th
Thankfully the new 4s has that issue solved...
there still remains a touch of flare, but nothing i would consider any real issue
iso80 f2.8 1/6000th
I feel I should note at this point that my comments here about the camera choosing certain setting were ill founded ... looking at the setting that both iphone4 and iphone 4s chose under these circumstances is appears par for the course...
These next 2 shots show a few things I think
iPhone 4
iso80 f2.8 290th
iPhone 4s
iso64 f2.4 1/350th
It might take a few flicks back and forth to see any difference ...
Mainly because there really arnt many ... I have looked pretty closely at these shots, in terms of detail, in real life ie not pixel peeping there isn't much difference in ...
The f2.4 lens offers no appreciable difference in DOF
the 4s does however seem to show a little more detail in the dark areas of the bush, and if you look at the sky you will see that it doesnt seem to loose so much to highlights ...
Which brings me neatly on to dynamic range
iPhone 4
iso80 140th f2.8
iPhone 4s
iso64 350th f2.4
as you can see by the settings the 2 cameras delt with the situation in a slightly different way.
The iPhone 4s has used slightly a faster shutter speed, to keep more of the highlight detail ... this is most obvious in the street light and roof of buildings outside
Yet despite using a faster shutter speed has still retained pretty much equal detail in the shadow areas!
At this point I decided to see if i could see if the 4s could provide any more detail
iPhone4
iso100 120th 2.8
iPhone4s
iso80 120th 2.4
Close inspection will show you a fraction more detail... bit of pixel peeping here with some crops
iphone4
iphone4s
But now back to the un-cropped version and compare the colour!
The iphone 4 has more "POP"
This looks to me as if it is a downside of the 4s grabbing more detail.. It appears to be doing it by producing less contrasty images!
I few other things I have noticed, from the shots above...
There is no difference in field of view between the phones (another point i got wrong in my preview)
According to lightroom, the 4 has a 3.85mm lens and the 4s has a 4.28mm lens. This of course means that the 4s has a bigger sensor ... something else i got wrong
I suppose you cant be right all the time!
And that's it for comparisons, hopefully they will help you draw a few conclusions of your own! please feel free to share them!
I'm going to do some more comparisons between the flash's and low light capability in the next few days ... so keep an eye out ...
