Jessops falls into administration

i never saw them as a specialist shop, from my own experience of going in the shop they were a high street retailer who sold camera stuff. i never felt as if i could get an info from them so i done all my own research then went in knowing what i wanted .... thats why i said i never saw them as specialist, just a shop that sold cameras

Now I see where you are coming from. We are having a violent agreement here!

Not just cameras. The shop in Douglas was nearly always busy dealing with the printing side of their business. The three staff are - soon to be were - helpful and knowledgeable but I can see this was far from the norm. When I bought my Sony A57 there last November it was cheaper than getting it from DigitalRev (I reserved on-line and picked it up 2 hours later. Easy). Now I don't have that option, there are 3 likeable youngsters looking for work and our only local option is PC World (no comment) unless our single on-island specialist dealer can afford to build up his stock levels again.

It is not just small communities like ours. Liverpool is not exactly overflowing with photography dealers.

Even John Lewis is variable. The problem in Liverpool is finding someone to actually sell you a camera - unless on the 2 occasions when I have bought there I chose the wrong moment.

Ah well, such are the realities of the retail sector. I doubt we will see an end to the shake up for a while yet.

And Andy - I find your posts balanced and helpful. Please keep them coming as it is interesting to see how it looks from the other side of the equation.

Adam, at least we are on here supporting photographers & I have never forced anything upon anyone, regards bargains , I do not think there will be much as Nikon,Canon, Pentax etc will be in the Jessops stores collecting back unpaid for stock & returning it back to their stores area.
Can not get anyone at Nikon /Canon on phone at present it will be total panic with them especially Canon LOL

It was a joke... But clearly I didn't make it clear enough.

Hi Hamish, not booked as yet as wondering if it is worth it as cost V takings is very close to just about breakingg even as very expensive to be there. If we are it will be a much smaller stand covering our main lines only.I may visit myself if not there working & will meet up with you all if it ties in, great to meet you all again.

They failed to move with the times - invested in brick & motor when the world was going Web, then failed to leverage the Web to do delivery through local stores

Tragic stuff - that's Cecil Jacobs and now Jessops in 12 months - but the writing has been on the wall for years

This is my fond Jessop's memory. Jessop's was four doors away from the apartment block i stayed in.

She was a really good sport. Having her tea break by Jessop's rear door when i walked past for some reason Sgma SD9 in hand.
She was always enthusiastic & helpful whenever i wanted to check out any camera. I hope she finds another job soon (though in the smallish town where we lived there was a scarcity of jobs).

Can see a pattern here now ,as the chief who took Jessops down went to HMV & same thing again great shame for HMV as I much prefer a CD in my hand than a download as if things go T---s up at least I still have my CD to re load.

As for Jessops going down its not surprising they moved our Jessops which was a small shop with good knowlegable staff to a superstore in the local shopping centre without moving the 3 staff!! The one camera shop we have left in Newcastle is so uncompetative with the internet that it wouldnt surprise me to see that close soon (As an example because I did the check for my HS30 £349 in the shop to £215 on the internet) the tesco down the road is even £100 CHEAPER

You should pop up & see us Dave as we are not to far from you, always happy to see new faces in the showroom, will even brew up for you ! LOL
Andy

Look forward to seeing you soon then, we do a complete range of gear, not just D SLR's including Fuji X series for example.

Andy for your used equipment do you something like for items over £200 put down 20% deposit, pay in instalments and collect when all instalments paid.
At some point i would like to get an Olympus e620 it is as the EP1 in one of the smallest dslrs with the tilt screen & handling of OMD.

I am really beginning to think perhaps I should make the jump and perhaps go down the second hand route now I have just seen a Nikon D40x for sale in CEX in town with a standard lens for £190 depends if its still there in a 10 days time when my money clears!!

Its a step well worth taking!
Although I would be inclined to get them down a little bit on that price, and look for a 6 month warranty if they stick to £190
