chose a high viewpoint way up in the stands, directly behind the goal

what most accredited photographers do, is this:

remote camera with a fisheye or something very wide. of course there is no reason that they could not then montage their pix together and all things being equal, probably have done in the past. not having accreditation for this game, without pitch access one has to improvise :)

J-League I guess. What teams, Peter?

sorry, not J-league. This one was the final of the Japan High School Soccer Tournament. annual fixture postponed from Monday due to extreme snow.

The Man U kid pictured earlier is going for selection trials tomorrow, at the Mitsubishi Youth Team. My goal at the moment is to gear up and market him and his brother to Japanese companies, in terms of sponsorship. Not sure if anyone ever did this but: travel, clothing, and training fees all add up especially when there are two of them. hey, I could be a chargeable expense...

As an aside, Japanese companies are very well invested in sports of all types, not just soccer. Almost like a sports scholarship, someone who excels in a particular sport will be picked up by the company that has a history. Sure, they are company employees, but might spend half the working day training. Tepco, the power company that is largely responsible for the litany of cockups in nuclear power, has a strong history in rowing for example.

Pete - agreed, access is everything!

how do you deal with the AF seeing the net and not the player?

AF? what's that? I use the 400mm F3.5. it does have a focus limiter, I didn't think to use it, even though you are trying to focus on the keeper, the contrast is greater on the net, and found myself focusing there sometimes. little slap. not quite the picture, but you get the idea
