Mam Tor Sunburst

The forecast wasn't good for my first sunrise, but I got up at 4.00 anyway. There were a fair number of stars and some wispy cloud, so I got ready and drove to the foot of Mam Tor (known by the locals as the Shivering Mountain because of the number of landslides). By this time the cloud was heavy and heaven only knows how I found the exit from the wooded car park with my little torch, but eventually I was making the ascent, buffeted by strong winds.

It was tough going and from the summit, the path along the Great Ridge took longer than expected. I made it with about 15 minutes to spare. There was only a sliver of clear sky left and I was very, very lucky to get this. Five minutes later a professional wildlife photographer turned up, but he was sadly too late. We chatted for a while and then the bad weather moved across from Kinder Scout. I've never seen anything change so quickly. Within a couple of minutes we couldn't see anything and we made our way down in the rain.

With my sincere thanks to Chris for staying with me on the descent. I'm sure he would have been quicker on his own, but he made sure I got off safely.

Love the composition. These types of gate ways, styles and such, are mostly objects of worn character and when you can get them in a shot, in this way, inclusive of the landscape, makes you what to be there.

Love shots with gap light - wonderfully atmospheric and props for being there

Love the way you take the path, through the gate and over the ridge - all the way to the sunrise - brilliant stuff
