A very nice lens by all accounts ... 17-40 is def a zoom not a prime though 
There is a Nikon equiv, the 16-35 a couple of years ago it went with me to Wales for landscape mooching it was perfect, so I'm sure you will be very happy together!

I already have a sigma 15-30 but i wanted something better and this is apparently better, not that I wasn't happy with the sigma but I hope at this stage it's about fine details

congrats! i figured you meant first L. the 17-40mm is a beautiful lens. you'll do wonders with it around scotland!

Agreed - all that L loveliness and Wiiiiiiiiide on your full frame Canon Davie
You might see a little CA on the wider focal lengths, but that is easily dealt with in post processing (At least in ACR it is)
