The original leak came via digicame-info.com, although that page appears to now be offline...

Looks legit - both lens and camera - and I suspect this will be officially launched at Photokina 2012.

On review, this definitely looks more Nikon 1 than Fuji X-Pro 1 - A consumer product for sale at CostCo offering.

Sure it will sell well, but I think it misses the mark from a photographers standpoint.

More point and shoot oriented I'd guess.

Looks nice to me!
I have no issue with the p&s target audience
i think it's pretty smart coming from companies that won't want to damgae slr sales
panny, Fuji etc don't have SLR's to damage ... Sony have techy cameras ... None have ranges like canon and Nikon ... They need differentiation!
Im very taken with the Nikon 1 system, and this looks similar with a bigger sensor!
If they get focusing speeds close to the Nikon it might well make a nice little bit of kit, regardless of lack of "pro" oriented fetures!

i was hoping for a canon offering similar to the x-pro 1 to entice me back to the dark side.. little bit of retro styling and lots of dials or rings instead of menus. seemed like they were leaning that way with the g9 and forwards. oh well, probably wouldn't give up the fuji for it now even if they did release something similar.

I'm with you 100% Beth.

Word is they'll see how this model sells, then may look to produce a 'pro' camera using the same lens mount.

Which is probably marketing speak for 'we haven't finished our X-Pro1 contender yet'! :D

There are 'sexy' clip-on skins to customize your camera, like a cellphone.

The camera is touch screen driven - looks cool but don't always register the finger press in the demo.

Aperture and shutter speed are on screen displays that you toggle on/off to control

AF is leisurely in the demo, it hunts nicely on the first try!

EF adapter is HUGE

It has a mini Canon flash unit as an accessory

Here is confirmation direct from Canon UK Ltd.

05:00 23rd July 2012

Canon today announces its highly anticipated entrance into the compact system camera market with the introduction of the EOS M camera and EF-M lenses, the small and simple EOS.

EOS M

An 18-megapixel interchangeable-lens compact system camera small enough to take anywhere. Enjoy simple creative controls and superb low-light performance for stunning images.

The first thing that will strike you when you hold this new model in your hand is the diminutive size and lightweight build that makes it easy to carry with you wherever you go. Measuring just 108.6mm x 66.5mm x 32.3mm at its thickest points, and weighing just 265g, the EOS M feels more like one of our G or S series cameras than one of our EOS models.

However, there are subtle design hints that give the EOS M a distinct EOS flavour. From the slope of the shutter button and integrated hot shoe, to the matte finish of the black model – you can tell that this camera has a distinct EOS heritage.

The camera features a new EF-M lens mount developed for the EOS M, which is optimised for the APS-C sensor. This allows the user to take advantage of the full EF lens range giving infinite creative possibilities.

When you look at the specification, it may remind you of another recently-launched camera – our new EOS 650D. Like that model, this camera features a high-resolution, 18 megapixel APS-C hybrid CMOS sensor. The large sensor allows you to reproduce your favourite moments in poster-size, or crop for maximum impact. It also allows you to artistically blur the background for beautiful portraits, or for close-ups with impact.

Evening shoots and challenging low-light subjects can be shot in natural light and in stunning detail thanks to EOS M’s sensitive native ISO range of 100-12,800 (extendable to 25,600).

The inclusion of our DIGIC 5 processor also means that colours leap out and skin tones are beautifully natural. To make sure you never miss a moment, a super-fast shutter lag allows you to capture split-second action and you can also shoot continuous bursts at 4.3fps.

Like the 650D, the hybrid CMOS sensor also supports a new Hybrid AF system. This provides super-fast, accurate autofocus when shooting stills and movies – ensuring you can capture any scene, subject or moment with complete confidence.

It’s a tribute to the efforts of our engineers that we have been able to pack technologies into a model that is approximately 60% thinner and 50% lighter than the closest DSLR model. This was the result that we wanted to achieve with our CSC offering: DSLR image quality in a compact, lightweight consumer camera. It was only after we were sure that we had achieved this goal that we gave it the EOS name.

And here's the Canon view on who this camera is aimed at.

According to Canon UK's David Parry, Canon is aiming the EOS M at a new market - people who want to get a bit more from a camera than a compact model can offer them, without the complication or bulk of a DSLR. It's for people who want to take better pictures, but who don't necessarily consider themselves photographers or want to become photographers.

People who don't necessarily consider themselves photographers or want to become photographers.... riiiight, nice one Canon :D

A right response to the Nikon 1. A family camera, not an enthusiast's camera. A camera to memorialize family events, not to produce photographs that can stand alone. The Nikon 1 is a very powerful camera, but all that power is aimed at making it easy to use and highly forgiving. The 21st century version of the 20th century family "Kodak".

Interesting cut-away graphic of camera and lens
