New Conceptual Project - Outside The Frame

I've been having a re think on this to work out a way of being more subtle visually but still conveying the idea. I've come up with this which will be in a series and have a few more ideas that I need to take the shot for. I thinking images that make things conspicuous by their absence. Instead of going for the obvious things I'm seeing how it works with fairly ubiquitous things that are not particularly iconic.

Its a composite of few images taken at different focuses.

As an image I like it. What I'm not sure about is the sharp delineation of the frames making uop the composite. I know whay they are there and I know, and appreciate, your interest in frames within frames but I'm not sure they work here. Maybe different opacities are the answer, I'm not sure. Either way I like the progression of the concept and really appreciate you sharing your thought processes.

Cheers Pete, I think the issue with the frames is that I'm really showing what should be a physical frame pictorially. If the frames are to remain I think they should be the actual frames or edges of the print or cutting the matts to shape. However when arranging the last one into the cross shape which was my original idea I did think that the idea could work better as a series of prints arranged in a row on a wall or in a room. as below. The original idea was a development of the very first image I posted but instead of blacking out the central part just leaving it out. However I'm beginning to think about how I might communicate the idea through the narrative which would be more subtle but more powerful. I've already seem something that I hope to photograph tomorrow on my way home from work.

I really need to go out and shoot some more now that I have some new ideas. However I've been playing around with the last set of shots to see what I can get out of them. I've not really explained the idea and one of the problems with this sort of stuff is that often you need the context as the back drop to understand the image. Also there is always a wrestling with the compromise that your not trying to create a striking image but to get an idea across. However you are doing this via a visual medium for what you hope people view for pleasure so a visual hook is needed.

The idea on these is to have a series of nice, non offensive but not particularly grabbing images where the subject is either half cropped on the edges of the frame or not in focus. Looking at the images one after the other you realise what the subject is but your being denied it. I like this idea more that the one of blacking out the subject in an image, its just working out the best way to put it into pictures.

Part of the problem is that the framing and hanging of them is part of it all and showing them seperately doesn't really work I feel. I think showing them on screen as a block with the idea that they will be individually framed and hung next to each other seems to work OK.

Still working on this idea of mine but decided to see if something presented itself to me and it did!

Wondering one night in Istanbul I found a large grand building opposite the ferry port that moves people and vehicles across the river to the Asia half of the city. The lights were on but the doors looked foreboding. Frosted glass effect plastic had been stuck to the windows in order to keep curious eyes out but here and there bits of it had been peeled away revealing what was inside. I'd like to think that someone inside wanted to share the wonders within with the outside. More likely it was the work of a bored child though. A small seated audience were watching a handful of men dressed in white gowns and trousers spinning in an intricate dance that seemed simple but complex at the same time. Their heads dressed with tall fez like hats tilted in the direction of their spin they twirled flaying out the tails of there gowns. Realising that I would probably never see such a thing again I raised the camera up and took a few shots. The remnants of the peeled of plastic obfuscated the scene but still enough penetrated through.

That'll be 'Sufi Whirling', it's supposed to be meditative... I think it's something to do with attempting to reach a higher state of consciousness
A very interesting shot mate! I think this is the best of the photos you have taken within this...

Edit - Fixed Image Size!

Here's a couple of ideas for this long term project exploring the ideas of frames. Both are quite different but linked if that makes any sense to anyone.

This is called Exit.

Both were taken at Kentwell Hall a while ago and have gradually bubbled up to the surface. Sometimes I have to not look at some photographs for a while and come back to them to stop myself being to precious about putting effort into the ones I shouldn't bother with. These I felt were worth working on a bit.
