Surprisingly light and compact for a feature-packed and durable body, it delivers superior DX performance to take your photography to the next level. By not employing an optical low pass filter (OLPF), the D7100 makes the most of its 24.1-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor to sharply capture even the finest textures in crisp high resolution. Its 51-point autofocus (AF) system offers you rapid and ultra-accurate image capture at a professional level. Drop, water and dust resistant, with magnesium alloy top and rear covers, this high-spec D-SLR shoots continuously at 6 fps, gives an extra telephoto effect with innovative 1.3x crop function and has ISO sensitivity of 100-6400, bringing superb results in poorly-lit environments or fast-moving action. Shoot with viewfinder or Live View, apply special effects in real time for stills or Full HD movies, and send images wirelessly (using the optional WU-1a wireless adaptor) to your smart device for sharing on social media – the D7100 puts exceptional control in your hands, wherever you go, whatever you do.

Andy your more than welcome to post product launch threads ...
if you have a look at the home page you will see this was made into an article.
i will often publish them as articles which might be beneficial to you ... Just thinking about loud :)

This has been launched as the flagship DX format camera so it is also aimed at the D300 users as a replacement model and there not happy from what I've heard. As well both the D90 and D300s will be withdrawn from sale this year as due to japanese law unless they are eletricley improved they will be at the end of there electrical safety life for new goods. The D600 was launched as the replacement for the D300 but becuse its not DX D300 users ae not seeing it that way the d600 has a DX mode but only gives 10.2mp the same as a D200 or D80 so for DX users its a backward step this is according to a Nikon employee

The only thing that I can think would worry a d300/s user would be the consumer level controls ... But for the other benefits of what is definitely an upgrade I would put those concerns aside
24mp without a low pass filter and an extra 1.3x crop ...
the d300 crowd who don't want to upgrade to full frame are substantially made up of telephoto shooters who like the long range they get with thier relatively inexpensive Nikon tele lenses.
so, a Nikon shooter with a d300 and a 70-200 2.8 currently gets 12mp and an equiv of 300mm fov
the d7100 will give them two options
1, 300mm equivelent fov with 24mp
2, use the 1.3x crop and get 15mp and an equiv fov of 400mm 2.8
not to mention that using the 1.3x mode also allows shooting at 7fps ... And focus points that cover the entire shooting area.
So, more mp at potentially longer lens equiv fov and faster.
No brainer upgrade IMO!

... My only real concern would be moire pattern and birds feathers ... ...?

Just to add to this, could I afford to upgrade my d700 to a d600 I would, despite the loss of some of the 'pro' controls ... And if do it even if I didn't have a d800

i doubt Nikon will be worried either, they know that the serious pros who shoot long lenses will just buy a d800 or d4 and a 600mm lens ... The 'pro' dx shooters are a minority ... But probably a minority with a loud voice at the mo - people like to moan.
if this had been called the d400 and had pro controls ... ... I was going to say there would be less moaning ... But actually they would probably still find somthing to moan about!

I just can't see Nikon making a 'pro' dx body now ... The market is surely too small?

... I'm supprised a Nikon employee regards the d600 as a replacement for the d300 ... The d600 is supposed to be a full frame consumer camera. The d300 wasn't full frame or consumer. The first in fact of its kind!!
Whilst of course the d7100 also doesn't have "pro" controls it looks to have a lot of very exciting specs that have definitely filtered down from up high ... ... I'm really struggling to see how a d300 user would be disappointed

Nikon are also realigning their numbers. 1,000 series is DX consumer 100 series is FX enthusiast and semi-pro and single digit is Pro. At least that is the way it looks to me.

I personally think there there trying to be to vocal to try and force a D400 but I think that idea is already dead in the water and has been for quite a while reading what Nikon themselves are saying

Conflicting information from Nikon USA and Nikon Europe. There is an indication from the latter that there may still be a slot open for a D300s replacement. Regional subsidiaries don't necessarily get the complete message from the head office.

... What on earth is the 'd400' going to offer then?

Difficult to guess. As far as a contemporary DX camera, Nikon ticked most of the boxes with the D7100. Certainly a somewhat more robust build with weather sealing, possibly a couple more FPS, a larger buffer, an uncompressed video out port...

I really can not think of much that is in the pipeline beyond that—at least that Nikon would likely incorporate.

I didnt get my information from USA or Europe but Tokyo there is some reason why the D400 will never be called that even if it is released (something to do with the number 400)! but the latest is there might be a Nikon 8000 or that is the latest rumour to come from Tokyo which will basicly be the same as the D7100 but with pro controls and a couple of extra things

My thinking exactly ... The d7100 does so much! Especially with it lacking a "olpf" ... That's the sort of thing they could have added (left off??) the d400 to make a gap. And then there is the price point... It going to be nipping at te heels of the d600 ... You gonna have to be a pretty bloody dedicated dx user to not be tempted up the food chain. And as I said before ... The potential users ... Is the market there for dx users that need these potential extras? Be very interesting to see what it does if it does get announced ...

The d400 could be called a d400 ... The Japanese supposedly don't like the number 4 ... But there was an f4 ... And a d4 ... So it's not likely to be an issue
