Nikon D700 shutter count

just sprung for a D700, consignment sale from a dealer here in Tokyo. thinking maybe I got burned and maybe I didn't. basically I have 10 days to check it out, but no warranty as such. Returns if not 'faulty' are not allowed by most camera stores in Tokyo.

yes it has a high shutter count....they 'did not know' the shutter count before I sprung for it. suffice to say WELL OVER the 150k. the camera itself looks a lot newer than the shutter count indicates though. no worn buttons or rubber coming off.

what I want to know is, if the camera's shutter is replaced, does it reset the shutter count? I'm thinking not. wondering if the previous owner had the shutter replaced at 150k and then went on to shoot again? I know getting any reliable history from a dealer is impossible, unless we are talking collectibles

also, off to Nikon Service this morning to see what a replacement shutter costs. camera came with the grip and normal battery, plus 3 EL4 batteries and the Nikon charger, which I suppose should have been a red flag to indicate that this probably had shot a LOT of frames. since I don't really shoot sequences, the charger and batts could be sold off to pay for the replacement shutter I guess. already has the normal EL3 battery, which is common to all my other cameras; this commonality was a deciding factor in purchasing, fewer chargers to pack/smaller pack size, etc.

Looks like the official Nikon line is 150,000 actuations rated for the D700

However, user data suggests that the life is much greater

I had an early life shutter failure on my EOS 1DII - and had it replaced by Canon - can't remember if the shutter count was reset, but I'd assume so, otherwise what's the point of having a shutter count?

If the camera is a good buy - run it until the shutter dies, and replace at that point - if it never dies (as is most likely) you'll be a happy man

Also - based on serial # - I'm sure Nikon can tell you if it's even been serviced or had the shutter replaced?

I am sure they can. Was going to take it into Nikon Service just to check the cost of a replacement shutter anyway. I see according to the KM method, 71% survival chance, that's pretty good odds. I'll back this horse I reckon :)

What actually breaks with regards to the shutter assembly?

All sorts of things can fail when the shutter goes David, pivots, leaves, springs etc. I think Chris' analysis is good Peter. I suspect the camera has been used for time-lapse work hence the high count and nice condition. I've no idea if that is easier on a shutter or not though.

¥33000 (about GBP 220) for a new shutter, fitted. And the man says they will stop supplying parts in 2020???

and yes Pete, after inspecting it a little more closely, you may well be right. about the only sign of wear externally is a little paint off the eyepiece shutter lever.

so does 200 quid still make it a good buy? Seems very reasonable

I suppose it depends on what you paid for the body in the first place but £200 to replace shutter may be cheap if you paid little for the body.Regards Shutters the figures given by say Nikon are a guide only, speaking to our contact he says Germany holds the record at present as there service dept hada D2x in for service & it had over 2 million on the clock !!

¥130,000 with the grip and 3 big batteries/MH21. that is pretty reasonable for Japan, it was a consignment sale at my local dealer.

So about £856 sterling so correct not a bad price at all as UK seems to be arounf £1100 for the body used at present, the most expensive bit you have is the MH21 charger for the bigger batteries as those are around £350 new alone so I would take shots & only worry about the shutter if it should ever go.
Enjoy it.
