over his elbow. what is it? it is almost square, which puzzles me somewhat

yes, it is shot into the light, so might expect some lens flare even with a deep hood, but the shape of this bemuses

ok. here's another shot from the same shoot, a few minutes later. this is straight off the card

Interesting shot though!
Very cinematic ... Almost looks like graphic art
Whats the story?

Re the flare, what's the kit that was used?

There is definitely some flare there ... That green bit ... Which is also odd shaped ... Maybe the shap is being influenced by something in the background somehow???

They look like inverted versions of the scene and so are probably the result of either a reflection on a lens element or from a filter with a poor coating. What was the setup?

the filter is covered in crap, that's for sure. these with D1x & 85mm. once I switched to the 300mm, the green flare mostly disappeared.

some of the green ghosting I have managed to clone out in other shots.

Always best to remove all filters when shooting high contrast lighting at night

Even coated filters can reflect and flare in these conditions - best to just get rid of all of them for the night.

I think you're looking at the inverted reflection of the main light source, after it's bounced off the sensor, up to the back of the filter, and then back to the sensor.

have to admit I didn't notice any problems with the Shonen Knife gig pictures, a lot of which were shot with the 85. and filter still in place but yes, I should have remembered. in mitigation, it was my first shoot at that location, m'lud.

I always used to be one of these 'hood on permanently and no filter at all' blokes, but clumsiness put paid to all that.

I gave up on filters a while back now ... Bought a couple of very expensive ones ... They were still rubbish!
Its a more risky but ultimately more satisfactory existence!
