Critique Welcomed Over The Grove

There's a grove of Eucalyptus trees across the valley, which I see every day from my walk.

They have a great shape, and stand out against the distant mountains when the light is low from the West.

Took a shot today to test it out - Canon 5DII and 600mm

It was more foggy than I'd like, so I think I'll try again on a clearer day and see what I get.

swmbo snapped me in action in the wing mirror

The fog works nicely to suggest the distances of the hills. Your SWMBO took a nice fotie of you also!
Thanks Brian - she's very talented :)

Lovely Chris. I was also looking through a 600mm this morning at mist on the hill opposite. I could hear some Chinooks and though a shot of them coming out of the gloom would be interesting but they never did and it was a bit too murky otherwise.

Thanks Pete - I find the quality of air really comes into play with the 600 when shooting landscapes. Even slight haze becomes a contrast killer with the compressed perspective

@Pete Askew - is it the Nikon 600 you're using Pete?

Yes, the Ai-S Nikkor 600mm f/4.0s IF ED manual focus lens. Paul at Commercial Cameras found me a mint version in its case. Weighs a bloody ton! I accidentally bought a 1000 f/8 catadioptric lens ex Jersey Police at the same time (the way you do). Just so happens they fit our video cameras too.

@Pete Askew - Ooooo 1000mm - now that's proper surveillance kit - especially with a crop sensor video camera!

There was a rumor that the old Canon 1200mm required security clearance to purchase it in the US - they were classing it as a military grade asset

No longer made of course - come up once in a while on EBAY for a gazillion Dollars

I have an old Sigma 600 f/8 cat. lens that I used in Africa years ago. Very light and superb image quality (I went for it as it was longer than the affordable equivalent from Nikon - 500mm) and it survived 4 weeks bouncing around in the footwell of a car on safari! The 1000mm is pretty damned impressive. When I get back from my travels next week I'll do a wee write-up.
