Thanks Dan. Apparently they are only found in a few places in Devon. They are a tiny bit more red in real life. The PP has pushed them slightly orangy but I wasn't after realism.

Depends if they've been near the green door!!
1/2" ish. Some days the pavements are covered in them!

How odd! they look a little like lady birds ...
I was doing some photos at a museum the other day and found a massive cluster of lady birds behind a window shutter ... very odd!

Yes, Ladybirds over-winter in large collections in sheltered spots. I suspect that's what you found.
