Surreal! What a great colours, and I love the composition! Could have been a tad sharper imo, but I like it the way it is...

stunning first photo to the forum, i was down here last week, didnt get any close to this good a looking. I sense a touch of HDR in this image?

Hi Jared - welcome! :)

Great use of HDR - really makes the lighting pop but also brings out a little colour in the sky to give it an extra dimension.

Which software did you use for your HDR processing?

Looking at the larger sized image on Flickr, I think it's the post processing that has given the lighting a glow - not an unsharp image at all.

Just as a matter of interest - do you have a UV(0) filter or any protective filter on this lens when shooting at night?

I've had problems with filters and night shots before - so try to remember to remove them now, just in case ;)

Have a try with and without the UV filter and see what you think next time you're doing night shots - I'd be interested to see if you have the same results I had.

I found the UV filter definitely added flare around bright lights at night, and that the flare was reduced or eliminated when I took the filter away.

Other than night shots, I leave the UV on all the time - so this may be the exception, rather than the rule.

Great shot and great first post!
welcome to the forum!

I shouldnt worry about shooting with a kit lens! realistically speaking that sort of kit is a hell of a lot more capable than most will let on!
I took all the uv filters off all my lenses a few years back, I just dont find any possible advantage they give me out weighs the negatives ... mostly to image sharpness!
