Still Life And Abstract

A wonderful set, Julian. The first has really stunning lighting and tones; the second delicate bursts of colour in the petals that really appeal to me.

Thank you Paul. The first I thought at the time would not be anything as it was very dark, an 8 second exposure, iso 100, the Foveon sensor is often reported as being useless in low light, so pleased with the outcome.
The vase of flowers, I like the blown out back light which gave the delicate colours.

Both a lot of luck, but I'll know next time hopefully how to use that to my advantage.

Very nice Julian. Very real life looking quality --- wOw.

Which camera body/lens were used for those captures?
Thanks Peter.
It was the Sigma DP3 which has a fixed 50mm f2.8. which would be a 75mm on full frame. I was actually getting a bit pee'd of with the camera. It is limiting, and the software is slow.
For windows there is only one raw converter, and in camera Jpegs are not up to much. Yet when it cracks it, all is forgiven.

Gorgeous, Julian. The first and third really stand out for me. What a camera! What a photographer! :)
Thank you Rob.

I have the impression that the Sigma cameras are for a very specific kind of photography and for that they truly excel. Try to use them for something outside of their remit as it were, it doesn't go well.

So true, with the new Merrills I think even more so. Most images do look similar down sized for the web, some of these Merrill images viewed large are remarkable. I've over used the camera since acquiring it and therefore been disappointed when used inappropriately, but for still life and landscape it can excel.

Love the first one Julian...it would fit nicely as the cover on a cooking mag.
Thank you Glenn, good idea must give Master Chef a call :)

Lovely set Julian and I like them all. The first really shows what the DP3 is capable of I think. Not much a problem with low light as high ISO I think. The 8s exposure has worked a treat. My problem was getting the camera to autofocus in low light. Did you focus manually?

I also really like the abstracts and the flowers do look like they were shot on film. Nice. :)

In fact that one did auto focus. I do sometimes check though. I have the rear top thingy set to MF/AF so I can go straight to either. Also if it is set to MF/MF I can touch the focus ring
when the shutter button half pressed and it does an enlarged image of focus point.(I am sure you know this) Always the problem with Contrast focus is if anything behind the desired focus area is a lot more contrasty it goes to that rather than the intended. You know this but it is something that I need to remind myself of if I see a problem area to focus on. I've got used to Contrast detect in using the Olympus.
In low light the DP 3 light it is generally poor, but as always sometimes there is something that it latches onto, which makes one think otherwise as if it is normal. But yes poor would be my verdict. Contrast detect need not be this slow as the Olympus with a 10stop ND filter focuses reasonably well.

That first shot is a stunner, lovely warm glow of lighting to add to the scene
