Tetons

next stop on the trip was grand teton national park near jackson, wy. the first night was great. i spent the early evening with a couple of moose, had dinner and grabbed some star photos without getting chased back to the car by wolves, like last time.. made sunrise the next morning which was nice, and by 10am it was miserable, foggy and snowing. again. happened to me two years ago too. cleared up for the next day, so i made one last pass through the park before heading off to colorado.

someone hilariously vandalized almost every deer crossing sign in and around the park.

moose (for the next few shots, sorry..)

sitting on the computer waiting to be processed.. someday..

Stunning shots there, Beth. And don't ever apologise for showing too many moose shots! The first star photo is stunning!

there are 71 shots of these two (and more from two days later of two different moose). i used the xe-1 and 70-200. i was really amazed at the quality of this lens. the sun was already behind the mountains so everything was in shadows and i wasn't sure how many of the moose shots would be in focus or blurry from camera shake. i ended up chucking 4 of them due to blurriness. there are quite a few more on flickr if you're interested.

That one moose, the wee one, has quite the cowlick! And a mohawk! He's stylin'!:)

Great set Beth. I agree about the star shots--stunning!--but the two Mormon Row shots are wonderful also!

thanks brian, the cowlick is on the mother too, in one of the photos it looks to be where the neck, shoulder and chest muscles converge leaving a small circular indentation in the neck. however the mowhawk is a feeble teenage attempt to be cool caused by hormones and a new found need for independence.

stars and Mormon row shots for me - breathtaking

How did you do the pano - is it a multi frame stitch in post?

thanks chris. 12 frames, shot raw, handheld, manual exposure, processed in lightroom, stitched in photoshop using photomerge. i have a second version of the pano that's a 180° view with more sky and foreground, and another of the tetons when it was clear. but they're still waiting to be processed.

Them's some skills there Beth - very nicely done

You're too modest Beth - I've seen folks with banding, exposure and WB variations, wobbly horizons etc

And you did it hand held! :)

that's why i shot raw and manual exposure. i'm sure acr and other raw editors will do the same, but lr lets me process one file for white balance, exposure, lens profile settings, sharpness, etc.., and copy the settings to the rest of the shots so if they're the same exposure and light then it's almost seamless going from one to the next. the little bit of vignetting that's not taken care of by the lens profile is minor enough to be taken care of by photoshop's automatic blending during the panorama wizard. there wasn't any adjustment needed to the horizon other than some minor straightening. i've found this easier (but more time consuming due to the long wait in photoshop) to use than fuji's in camera panorama thing. i've only played with it a few times, but it gives me some odd results.

thanks aldous and dan.

Wonderful set Beth. You should go away on holiday more often! ;)

thanks, i'll tell my boss. :D we've been horribly understaffed for years, but we're 5 months away from being fully staffed. so if all works out then i'm going to try to get another week off in the spring to head out to colorado and tetons again. never been there in the spring when the wildflowers are in bloom.
