The Look

Shot after a formal dinner at a hotel in Köln last week. Not the best of locations but I liked the lighting and the look as it fitted with some ideas I've been playing with for some time so decided to post it anyway.

Pete, I like this, not sure I'm reading everything into it but I like it, for me I would it cropped tighter to the left, not sure why but for me it feels right...........tones are great, and boy are you in for it or what!!

I love the tones on this, Pete, and I think the lady's look shows emotion, tension, even the promise of action about to unfold. The colors on the drapes come off very nice in this, too.

That's a big lampshade Pete! :D

Love the toning and diffuse glow - and it's not square! ;)

Looks a little like a Flamenco is underway?

Stunning pete! Love the lines and how soft it is. Works extremely well IMO.
Köln (or as the brits say, Cologne.... I think) is an AMAZING city, I'd be very suprised if the cathedral didn't temp a visit. :)

Hi Paul, yes all of the major PP was done using Nik add-ins in PS (as an edit-in from LR - where a slight crop was made). First was a monochrome conversion (full range, Fuji Neopan simulation, medium coffee stain, slightly increased grain : pixel). This created a new layer and I reduced its opacity to ca 80% to allow some colour to bleed through. The border was then added using Canvas Size. The other manipulations were next done using ColorFX 4 using a yellow E6/C41 CP (to push contrast a touch and keep the tones warm - I wanted to get rid of the last of the blue tones from the curtains), then a glow was added (70%) using a warm glow temperature. A vignette was then applied (with narrow edge and low opacity and centred to make it look like light falloff from the lamp) plus a curves / contrast filter to fine-tune the overall 'look'. A small amount of cloning was used to get rid of a power lead and the edge of a table that was intruding into the frame slightly (hotel room!). Once back in LR I used a couple of gradients to adjust the vignette and the file was sharpened for output using Nik Sharpener (40% Adaptive Sharpening), then exported as a JPEG for upload.

So, I hardly touched the original file all all!!

I really admire the people who can take shots like this and make them look good... brilliant shot and so intriguing

Yeah lovely shot this Pete...
I think I too would be inclined to crop a touch to remove the second chair and a smidge of the bottom ...
With the chair there I think a pair off knees sticking out off it would have worked really well!

Really like it though, especially the PP ... I probably shouldnt say this on an open forum, but the pp is reminiscent of an experience from my wilder days involving a certain type of fungus ... :/

I'm really behind on my thread reading ...

Quite like the lighting and ambiance/mood here, Pete. But I agree with the others on a tighter crop. But then, I'm always trying to find a tighter crop.
