I assume the new forum works the same way as the old and the files were limited by size to save on server space / costs. They are uploaded as is and displayed as is. The uploaded files will of course be limited to some degree, but should be fine for the purpose of sharing (they are after all JPEG and, to a certain extent, limited by the HTML rendering as far as I understand). Larger and zoomable files can be shared by using links to photo-sharing sites etc. I use Photobucket, not because it is particularly good, but because I've had the account for years, it is quite cheap and I'm not displaying images publicly on it (my website is for that). A lot of folks went to Flickr when Photobucket started charging, but I was too lazy and later on wasn't too keen on Flickr's rights policy. Although I tend to use smaller files there too, I can upload much larger ones if I need.
