Uploading RAW files question

Hi all

I have a Canon EOS 400D camera and have been taking pictures using the RAW+Jpeg pic size, but when uploading the pics onto my computer using the EOS utility they are automatically uploaded as Jpegs and I can't find how to upload the Raw size, nor how to alter the settings.

Can anyone help please?

Many thanks in advance

Ian

Maybe a canon person can help, but my advice is the same as it always is ..
Use a card reader plugged into the computer, and you don't have to worry about any of that sort of thing!

Thanks Hamish.

Any suggestions as to which, or all they all about the same?

Best wishes

I don't use Eos Utility as i don't like it. If you just connect your camera to computer. Then find the Drive & assigned letter in "My Computer" have a look into the memory card in the camera. Does it show to images per photo IE 1 Jpeg & 1 Raw.

I Used a kodak card reader from argos about £14 and i can copy over all Jpegs and or raws hassle free and very quickly

Cheers Hamish.

Hi Darren

I've opened up the file in My Computer and they're all Jpegs.

I've done a little searching on Google since posting the thread and the consensus appears to be that you can't shoot RAW files when the camera is in auto mode. I really don't see why it should be a problem, because even if the camera has done everything automatically, I may want to alter photos from colour to b&w, etc.

If this remains the case then it means buying a card reader is a waste of (very little) money until I learn how to use the camera properly.

Oh God-that could be a verrry looong time:o

Best wishes

I will second Mr. Darren Turner's input, I don't use the Eos utility either it's slow & I just work more efficiently without it.

As far as not being able to get raw from auto settings, I never encountered this on my SLR but on my G11 it happened, and for a while I was confused as to why Raw is selected but I'm not getting raw files until I realized that on my SLR I never shoot auto but on my point & shoot I do very often.
My guess is Canon figures if you can't use the more advanced settings then you probably don't need the Camera Raw settings on the computer which disappointed me too since I like Raw images but don't care to shoot manual with my G11.

I had the same problem with my 350D, whenever you use one of the presets the camera automatically switches to jpeg output, only when shooting in the "creative modes" as canon calls them i.e. P,Av,Tv,M etc will it allow you to shoot in RAW.

I don't know why Canon do this, and to be honest it seems a little silly really. Even my 5D switches to jpeg when in full auto mode.

So your best bet for shooting in RAW with it is to play around with the so called "creative modes", shouldn't take you long, I had to do exactly the same thing not so long ago and now I wouldn't go back (in fact I can't as there are no presets on a 5D and my 350D is gone)

Hope i have helped somewhat. :-) Learning is a fun thing isn't it :-)

I will check my 7D but 99% positive that i can shoot raw & jpegs in all modes, i have never used full Auto so cannot comment on that mode but will check shortly.

Card readers are getting pretty cheap these days, not long ago I bought one for my sister-in-law for about £6 at the local Asda.

I think you need a processing program such as Lightroom or Aperture (if you're a Mac user) which should (if your input settings are so) automatically import your RAW files.
Check your menu that you are shooting just RAW and not RAW+JPEG. Personally I only shoot RAW all the time so can only imagine you're missing some kind of utility in your Canon software?

Have you got Adobe Camera Raw included in your Canon software bundle? At the worst you could pick the CR2 files out of there.

Ithink Ian wants to shoot in Raw & Jpeg but his camera wont allow this while shooting in Full Auto Settings. :D

Ian
I have checked my camera and it will allow me to shoot in both Raw & Jpeg across all modes including full auto.

Ah, sorry. I was also guessing though that no raw files were visible upon downloading the images even if they did exist?
