viewing stations for event photography. solution?

I'm being asked to provide event photo service, on a fairly irregular basis, for an unknown number of clients.

I'm not ready to plough a load of money that I don't have, into commercially available event photo systems.

is this viable as a stopgap? multiple iPads displaying the contents of a slideshow. each image would be onscreen for 5 secs, with a filename. or possibly a venue might have a video projector, could use that.

in the event that is coming up, I have a dress rehearsal to shoot stills at, the main event the following day they want me to shoot video. I was planning to do the still image display right after the main event. this is a kids' drama school performance. I don't want to display prints because of the fiscal overheads....

would anyone who does event photography be able to shed some light?

i don't, but i know a guy who does wedding photography and shows the ceremony photos and engagement shots at the reception. he shows them on a small flat screen tv that he hooks up to a laptop using a monitor cable. he used to use a projector, but it can be hard to see if the lights are on so he switched to a tv display.

I've seen the same set-up as Beth described, but could see the iPad idea also working very nicely

Just make sure you tie them down so they don't walk away!

an alternative then

digital photoframes, just because they are lower upfront investment. copy the images to whatever card fits, and set a few up. then again, I have no further use for them, other than perhaps further events?

whereas the ipad idea, at least the investment is justified by further use, by all the family.
