When Mistakes Make The Art

Here's a BBC article about the 19th century female photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron, discussing how her out of focus shots, complete with smudges and scratches, were seen in a negative light by the photographic community, and in a positive light by the artistic community. Unfortunately, I don't think readers outside the UK can view this:

I can access it, Rob. Interesting stuff. Thanks for posting it.

Indeed, it seems the debate is still ongoing among modern practitioners of photography!

The esthetic trumps the pixel almost every time for me. Like someone on Flickr once remarked as a way to explain why he preferred film over digital: "Digital images look like what I saw; images on film look like what I remember." That struck a chord for me. I don't always need, nor do I necessarily want, pixel-by-pixel sharpness to be pleased by an image.

Someone just mentioned JMC in another thread in the last few days, didn't they? I know I just looked at quite a bit of her work recently and I think I was prompted to view it by something I read on here. Maybe not, but I've always considered her to be an innovative artist and admire her work a lot.

BTW, I guess the "special relationship" extends to BBC content, also, because I can access the BBC just fine.

I never noticed her name come up here recently, but it might have.
Ah ha, found it. Brian mentioned her in a comment on Pete's Aphrodite post. I knew I'd seen the name recently. I may be old, but I'm not senile yet. :)
