Tomorrow is the 15th birthday of a good friend of my younger daughter, Meg. Turns out the wee lassie has a love of photography, and what's more she has recently acquired an interest in film photography. This is a result, I am told by Meg, of seeing some BW images that I had taken a few weeks ago and that she and some other kids were in. (I had taken said shots with my Oly XA and they were at night and the kids were horsing around and because I was using available light some of them looked ghostly and so on.) The wee lassie has since expressed a desire to get a film camera. She won't know it until tomorrow, but she's getting one.
I was going to give her a Yashica MG-1, but the meter on that one has decided not to work. So it came down to this Yashica 230 AF, a Holga 120N, or a Kodak Hawkeye Flash Model, which are all among my inventory. I decided against the Holga and the Haweye because they use 120 film, which would be less easy for her to get developed (plus the Hawkeye is actually designed for 620, so you have to be really particular about keeping your take-up spool).
In the end I figured a competent and relatively modern 35mm SLR would be about best since she can get the film relatively easy and take it to a one-hour photo for processing. With the 230 AF you can select shutter priority, aperture priority or manual exposure. It has automatic focus if you want it, and comes with a decent Kyocera 35-70 f3.5 zoom lens. It has auto advance and rewind, too. Hope she likes it.
Here are some test shots I took today at Signal Hill City Hall.
