A scary realisation ...

... Happened today in me!

My eyesight has got so bad in my right eye, I can no longer manual focus adequately with it!
I'm going to have to swap eyes! It's a very odd thing to get used to!

I have these old screw in diopters that have some mad prescription in them ... They look to screw apart but have been glued I think.

'Back in the day' did folks have these things made to suit their eyes?

Hamish seriously don't struggle with it get it checked out....as for the diopters no eyedeer [doh]

The X-Pro1 does not have an adjustable eyepiece, using the screw-in diopters. I use grocery store reading glasses, and rather than hunt down the proper diopter, I tried viewing with the glasses on. It worked perfectly. So I adjusted the X100 and D700 viewfinders to match the reading glasses, and now I can carry any combination and move easily among them.

My reading glasses must be pretty good—they cost over $10.

Kev's advice is very sound. Get your eyes checked especially is the change has been fairly rapid. Hopefully it is just that your eyesight has deteriorated and nothing more serious.

Normally I focus with my left eye but when I had problems with my sight I switched to my right. I find I can focus perfectly that way but my compositions are rubbish! The world looks more real through my left eye than my right in some way. You can get dioptres made for some viewfinders. Others, like the D3 have an adjustment and if your eyesight has deteriorated you should be able to change the setting such that the lines on the focusing screen are sharp. Sometimes a viewfinder (like the F3 HP) can be used using spectacles.

Anyway, top priority is to get your eyes checked!

Tomorrow!

Had them tested not long ago ... That was the first time I have had it acknowledged. Nothing serious just deteriorating...
Today is just the first time I've noticed it effect me.

I bought a new camera see ... :)

It seems to be harder to take a level photo with my left eye

How about a monocle then?! ;)

The reason I put the lens on the focus hood I made was to solve the frustration of having to put reading glasses on to do the coarse focus and then taken them off to use the loupe. Plus, I have some glasses I can hang around my neck and you wouldn't believe how often they get caught on control knobs etc! Bloody annoying! I think the whole glasses thing is why I find the RX100 so difficult. I can see to compose but not to be sure I am happy with the focus etc. I find that the higher the resolution of the screen, the harder it is.

Im sad to read that about your eye Hamish. It is not a possibility with the work you do, yet since i pretty much gave up on computer over a year ago my right eye improved from -10.75 to -9.5, my left from -9.5 to -8.25.

All i can suggest is to stay OFF ALL processed foods & drinks & any foods which has chemicals.
You should notice an improvement within a year.

Hamish, I have always focused using my left eye. I find it so much better and more comfortable, and as Pete said, through the left eye the world looks more real.
But the main reason is that my vision/sharpness in my right eye is far from good.
I wear glasses behind a monitor due to this. I could not manually focus through the right if my career depended on it.
I would say 99.9% of the time, I channel down the viewfinder with the lefty, 0.01% of the right, turned into a quickly learned from disaster.

As mentioned above by a few, get it checked out just in case.

Quite an interesting one this is though........

Are you a righty it lefty?!

Sorry to hear about your eye, Hamish. Nothing I can add to help I'm afraid.

However, this issue of left eye focusing/composing is intriguing. I use my right eye for this (with specs on). Maybe I'll try the left just to see what happens. (Then I could blame my rubbish compositions on my physical imperfections.;))

Did someone say glasses?
Surely I didn't wear glasses??

Even 20 years ago I had style!!!!! Get in!

Oh, that made my day Dan - should be your avatar I think! :D

Sucks getting old Hamish - I, Like Larry, have the cheapo reading glasses (from Costco) which work a treat when needed.

I tried some different diopters from Fuji for the X-Pro, but probably didn't work out the factor I really needed!

No, I've had to change it back Chris, I can't look at those glasses any longer!!! :D:D

I'm right handed ... I've always used my right eye so my nose doesn't get in the way. Left eye users look odd to me

i might go back to the opticians and ask him what the closest diopter would be. It's only on this new camera that I need one anyway I think

I'm right handed too but use my left eye to focus / compose (as does my friend in Sweden). It would be far more practical to use the right, especially with a rangefinder, but it just doesn't work for me.

All right then, enough hints! So what have you bought then?!
