Accidentally Shot in "B" Mode

Was shooting with my Holga 120N a couple of weeks ago at the beach. I didn't realize the shutter was on "bulb" mode, meaning that as I pressed the shutter release, it would stay open as long as my finger held the button down.

Out to sea a weather front was gathering and I thought it might make for a dramatic image. So this image is the result of shooting hand-held in "B" mode. I like it for some reason, though. Just wondering if anyone else finds this appealing? (Or appalling?)

The film was Arista EDU 100 ASA, and I developed it in Rodinal.

Appealing? It's fantastic (apart from the line!!). I love the textures and blur. It reminds me of some of the shots in this series. The ones taken during a storm - Magnumphotos.

What a great series, Pete. Thanks for posting. I'll have a more thorough peek at 'em in a wee while. But four now, thank you for your comment. (I can get rid of that line by re-scanning--don't know why the scanner did that on this and a couple of other images.)


I wonder what equipment he was using. It was in '84, so must have been film back then. This one looks so Holga-esque:

I think it's ace.... Very moody and dramatic the overbearing storm cloud adds to that I think . Kinda reminds me of the backgrounds Salvador Dali painted. Great accidental work!

I thought those Magnum shots Pete linked were shot in '84, but looks like actually it was '92. I guess they could have been digital images, but I don't think so.

Pete,...what do you think, film or digi?

I have the book and it was all shot on a Nikon FM (maybe an F3 - I'll check when I am back in Potsdam). But certainly film - it does say which in the book but I can't recall.

You could clone that line out in PS rather than re-scanning

Pete,...Good idea. We're planning a trip to the UK in August; I'm trying to figure out how I can fit that Devere enlarger chassis into my luggage without my wife knowing about it.

By the way,...I meant to respond to your scanner question the other day and I got distracted. Did you come to any decisions on that scanner you posted for opinions?

Hi Brian. Not made any firm decisions yet. I'll wait until I can afford something decent. Until then I will pay the extra £2 at Jessops to get them put on to disc when getting developed.

I think that is a good decision.

For what it's worth, I use the Epson V500. It's one of the lower cost yet decent film scanners and it will do 35mm negs or slides (or prints) as well as 120 negs. I'm very happy with it. Most owners of this model who've posted their opinion seem to feel the same I think.
