I am looking at buying the sigma 8-16 mm lens as mentioned .... however looking at ebay and speaking af deals I see someone selling a Canon 1DS Mk1 with a sigma 15-30mm atttached for £625, shutter count less than 18,000 .... it's a toughie innit, or is it a no brainer ?

come on camera bods, any opinions

Where's Chris when you need him Eh? Sorry, I know virtually nothing about Canon and their S/H values. Are you shooting 'full-frame' at present? If it is the EX lens then the reviews are not bad but I'm not sure how you would make a comparison. Not much help really am I?! :(

i'm not shooting full frame at the mo, I have a 550d and the full frame is appealing :) this is why i hate having money to spend

That's probably the factor that would swing it for me. OK, the lens is not as wide and has a smaller range. Would your other optics be compatible or would you use them as a back-up system with the 550D?

now there is a question i never thought of

I just had a look at KEH for comparison purposes. They have a 1DS in what they call EX+ condition for $599. (I think they have a 6 month guarantee on their used equipment, too.) Body only, though.

By the way,...Santa received my list and has already taken action. (Suggesting of course that I must have been a good boy this year.)

Its the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 for me. But I don't get to shoot with it until Christmas Day according to Santa's emissary. (SWMBO.)

i live in the UK though Brian lol... these emissaries are a pain aren't they lol?

11 MP - so not huge resolution by today's standards

Built like a tank - very heavy, but very robust

Great 100% viewfinder - fast AF

Battery life not as good as new models - takes the large original 1D type battery - make sure the charger is in the deal as they are expensive to replace

ISO noise better on the 5D or 5DII at higher ISOs

Shutter should be good for 10-20x the current count

I'd also look used 5D and 5DII if I was considering FF Canon

Are all your lenses EF mount or are some EF-S?

EF-S will not work on the 1 Series or 5 series bodies

cheers Chris,

i noticed the iso but I don't think i've ever taken a shot on higher than 400 on purpose lol, the charger is included.

the lens thing is an issue, i will have the lens that is coming with it to play with before i go for a prime next month ( maybe a utility 17-40)

i'm not getting rid of the 550D necessarily until i've done a side-by-side comparison using the same lens on both cameras

Davie after lugging the 1D for four hours in local woods i hastily went back to mirrorless.
Lugging a 1DS around the Highlands (possibly with heavy tripod) ?

I went through similar experience shooting on the streets lugging my 5D2. Now I shoot with X100 99% of time, at least in the environment that I want to use a wide angle lens in.

i thought about that, i'm hoping that with being a big strong lad I may manage.. the weight can always be spread in a backpack

Davie, don't underestimate the weight of a big camera! It will get you down on a long walk!

my vote for the 5d too (if an option exists) full frame is a great thing, smaller body, lighter ... Newer (??)

would the 5d be that much lighter when a battery grip was added ?

With battery grip added, the difference would be small, but you always have the option to take it off when needed.

would it be sad to say that i like the way they look and handle with the battery grip on :o anyway i've bought the 1Ds lol and it should be here Saturday or Monday. If it doesn't work out weight wise or picture quality wise i can always re-sell as it has a low shutter count and look at another full frame option.
