Albert Watson On Skye

Hmm...I found him quite annoying...and does he really need four people to take a photo? Ah well, not my cup of tea. The best shot was the one through the rain-swept car window.

I found this very disappointing and did not feel inspired by Mr Watson who I found to be a bit too pretentious for my liking. He said he was not out for post card images and yet proceeded to produce exactly that. Skye is a camera ready subject and with a bit of equipment and know how a good shot is there for everyone. He obviously thinks what he is doing is unique but his techniques and resulting images are somewhat cliched. When he said "we must not let the landscape dominate us but we must dominate the landscape" I wanted to hide. When he referred to the technician, who was having coffee right beside him, as the 'technician' I got really pissed off; surely she has a name. Some of his portrait images looked very interesting though.
Then I think back to the wonderful Tom Wood program and just wonder ....

I agree Tom and the team did seem a bit excessive! I like his portraiture work but this was nothing special. Mind, it has almost inspired me to dig out the boxes of slides I took on Skye - I have a fear they will be equally dull though!
For the craic Pete, how about you digging out a half dozen or so from your trip Pete and I'll do the same with a half dozen from mine. I think I know where they are. They were all shot with my first digital camera, a 1.3 mp Kodak of some sort. I spent two weeks walking the Northern half of the island; the furthest south would have been Portree and Dunvegan. My intention was to return and walk the Southern half but it hasn't happened yet. It would be interesting to see how they compare subject wise. Interested?

Nice. And you had some funny blue stuff in the sky too!

The scanner is still running but here are the first couple. Taken in 1986 (based on the processing date on the slides). No identifier on the mounts but I am 99% certain it was Ilfochrome. The originals are nice and sharp (well as sharp as they could be in the pouring rain!) and they would have been taken using a Nikon FE and Nikkor 105/2.5. I used an Epson VF750 scanner and their standard mounted slide holder. It is not quite getting the right plane of focus. My other holder system can be adjusted but I have never set it up for 35mm as I usually use a film scanner for that, but that is at work. As you can see, I have gone for the mystical look! ;)
